Is Timothy Hay OK to use for Garter Snakes?

Is it okay to use Timothy Hay for bedding (substrate) for my Garter Snake? She is a Florida Blue Stripe Garter Snake… Thanks!

Hi,

Many different kinds of substrate are possible: everything from a planted terrarium to paper towels or butcher’s paper. Other popular substrates include wood shavings (aspen is best, pine is probably all right, but never use cedar), cypress mulch, bark nuggets, or indoor/outdoor carpet.

Timothy hay is often used as food for animals, so I’m not sure that the snake won’t just try to eat it if you use it as bedding…I would recommend using paper towels. They are cheap and easy to clean when soiled.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Well, we’ve been using it and she seems to be okay with that for now. I heard that wood shavings of any kind will give her splinters… I don’t know for sure, but I DO know that I mentioned paper towels to my husband, as I thought it was a good idea too. But he was all like “That would look terrible, though!” So I don’t know. We might switch to aspen chips, or stick with the hay.
