I took my puppy for his first walk today and he became very nervous

my puppy became very nervous and frightened when I took him for his first walk today. He wouldnt even move anywhere when I put him domn on the ground. He began to shake and looked very scared that I had to carry him back home. How do we overcome this problem and what should I do to stop him doing this?

don’t just pull them down the road like michellekay13 said. Seriously look at her pet questions she has asked she has no idea what she’s talking about.

Your puppy is nervous and scared in the new setting of being outside and is probably overwhelmed by all the new sounds, smells and sights. If you puppy is scared it is not good for him to just drag him outside. Start by walking him around you yard for walks and getting him used to that. Once he is comfortable doing that start walking down the street and back a little ways. Ease him into it and talk to him kindly and let him know that everything is going to be okay, he’s going to need your support. Soon he will get used to walks, he just needs time and kindness to help him get to that point.

My dog was like that when we first got him, maybe because he was a rescue dog, but I think it happens to a lot of dogs. He will get used to walks eventually. First maybe let him run round the garden (if you have one), then walk him a short distance, then a bit longer, then a bit longer till he gets used to them :]

That’s what my dog used to do; he sat down and didn’t want to move and started whimpering =/ But eventually he began to walk for longer without doing it and now he’s fine :) It might be nerves, because everything outside might look so daunting to him x

Answer #4

Well when I train my dogs to walk I kinda just pull them down the road. Eventualy they start walking and I also walk with my other dog sometimes and it helps them out. By the way the dog probably scared of cars just work with him/her inside then move to your backyard then slowly make your way

It’s normal for him to be nervous. Just pull him, he will finally start walking on his own. Don’t scold him for not walking, it will just make him more nervous and scared. An easy way to get a puppy to walk is to make him focus on a treat, then move it foward and make him walk a short distance, then give him the treat and praise him. If he jumps, bites the leash, tries to pull away, etc. Hold his collar and make him sit for 5 - 10 seconds, then try it again.
