How can I stop self-destructive behavior?

I have a problem, and I know it’s a problem. I cut myself. I don’t do it terribly often, and I always use a clean blade and always take care of my cuts afterward. I am too afraid of infections to not take care of them. I cut myself on my forearm, the cuts are about an inch to an inch and a half long. They are on my forearm and my upper arm.

I know it’s a problem and I know I do it because my family and I don’t get along and because they don’t appreciate my dreams or my looks or my life. I am kind of overweight and I try so hard to love myself and to respect myself but everyone is constantly so negative toward me. They make me feel stupid and fat and ugly and cutting seems like the only way to make it go away.

I have tried so hard to stop cutting but it seems like I keep going back to it. I have not told anyone. I told my brother that I was having feelings of depression but he does not know I cut myself or that I have thought about doing other destructive things (drinking, drugs, etc).

I guess I am just asking for help to know how to stop and stop for good.

People cut on themselves as a way to bring inner emotional pain they have no control over to the surface, through cuts, to release the pain and control it and then watch it heal. It’s a common thing for young people to do. It is a mental issue.

ALl the advice here is good. My advice you can do now is watch the movie The Secretary. It’s totally rated R, but the girl in the movie cuts on herself and there are some good insights in the movie as to why she does it.

My daughter was a cutter. At first we didn’t know why, but we found that it was a form of negative attention seeking behavior. She went to counseling. I don’t know what was said in there, but whatever it was worked with in weeks. The counselor would know best. But you have to take the first step and seek counseling. Obviously, there is something you are lacking that needs attention, and that maybe your only way to express it. That being said, please find a counselor. There are counselors in every state who has some program where you can go for cheap. Also, check your local university if you have one by you. I know it’s hard, but you can do it. You’ve already made progress by posting the question on this site.
