How to help my obese dog lose weight?

Keekee is 7 years old and obese. She stays outside most of the time so we leave food out there for her, along with my other pets.

She eats dog food MOST OF THE TIME but ocassionally gets fed table food just like my other pets. However, she is the only one gaining a lot of weight. And I don’t know what to do because my other big dog needs to eat also but Keekee bullies my other pets when it comes to food and they are so scared of her that they don’t dare eat until she’s finished. (and there’s usually nothing left in the bowl once she walks away from it from my observation). I cannot sit there and watch them eat all the time and I don’t know how to prevent Keekee from eating a lot. She not only eat her part, she eats all my other pet’s food. And when I yell at her and try to get her away from it, she acts like I’m not there.

Keekee is a really good dog. She’s obedient most of the time. It’s just when it comes to food, she’s out of control and gets real stubborn.

How to help her lose weight?

Answer #1

Well cut down on food portions… thats for sure… and give her lots of exercise… but dont over -do it because you have to gradually increase her stamina and fitness… Also try putting her in another room from your other animals… See the vets aswell and ask what there oppinion is… = )

That’s the thing, they can’t be on a schedule like that because (for phrannie) if I use that method of taking her out and feed her seperately and not let her go until Wonton is done, it wouldn’t work out because Wonton doesn’t always feel like eating.

Answer #3

The Vet’s going to tell you she’s WAY fat, and will die if she doesn’t get on a diet…this means YOU have to control her food intake.

I don’t know how many pets you actually have living outside…but putting them ALL on a food schedule… This means you put the appropriate amount of food for each animal in it’s bowl…take KeeKee and feed her in a different area…she probably inhales her food anyway, then don’t let her go, till the rest are finished. If any of them leave food, pick up the dish, anyway.

KeeKee isn’t going last long, as heavy as she is…

You’re simply going to have to invest some time…

You are allowing her to dominate and be the “pack” leader, You need to be this person and you will have to stay each time they eat until she learns that she can’t do that, I would feed all the other dog’s first and when they are done she will get her food. you need to measure it also.

you will not like what the vet is going to say, she is close (by the picture) to what a 500lbs person would be. that is not good

She even LAYS DOWN to eat.

Well I think you know all the answers, you just have to be wiling to step up to the plate and do then, so here are some pointers

  1. dogs should not have a bowl of food available all day long.
  2. they need seprate bowls
  3. you need to feed them on a schedule and start with the most submisive dog first.
  4. they need to “earn” there food
  5. You need to be in charge
  6. Take her for walks, once to twice a day
  7. no more table food
  8. make sure she is getting a good dog food, I like Nutro
  9. Green beans are good for weight loss for dogs
  10. take her to the vet to make sure nothing else is going on to cause weight gain

I am just going to be a little blunt here (sorry) If this is really your dog, you are killing her. All the things that humans get from being over weight, dogs get also. You need to get this undercontrol.

Answer #7

separate her from other pets when there is food around, and walk her for at least 30 min, twice a day (less food more exercise just like us… good luck..

Answer #8

:(

I am aware that they shouldn’t have food available all day long. They do eat in their seperate bowls but Keekee does not care. She will hog all the bowls there is and my other pets fears her so they stay away.

I think I will have to take her to the vet soon and see what the veterinarian say about tihs.
