How to help your dog?

I have a picture of my dog… he’s 3 years old and is over weight :( We didn’t pay much attention of how much food or treats we gave him. Now I’m extra careful with what I give to him and how much. I was just wondering. Whats the best way to help him lose weight? I need as much help as possible. I don’t want him to stay like this tell he gets old. = / I was also wondering, if he lost weight would he be more active? He’s very very calm and hardly ever gets hyper. Sometimes he will play but not very much. He has a hard time getting up and down the stairs and he moves kind of slow… so if I get him to lose weight do you think that would help him be more active? Right now we’re giving him diet food and I only give him a small peace of a treat once at night and sometimes I skip a few nights before I give him one.. thanks for all the help you guys give and I would really appreciate it = )

go outside and play around with him, thats what I did a few months after my dog had, puppies and her stomach toned right up and she got her muscular line back

Answer #2

Try talking to a vet they will know what to do better then anyone on here would.

Less food, more exercise…just like people. NO TREATS.

Your dog looks like a Rottie or a Rottie cross…so by nature he’s a pretty stout dog…he probably doesn’t have to lose as much as it appears right now. 10 to 12 lbs, might be all he needs to get rid of.

His inborn nature is what determines if he will be “hyper”…however, he WILL get more playful as he loses weight. Just like with overweight people, it’s hard work carrying around the extra pounds…also, just like people, it’s extremely hard on their joints…especially as they age.

Good for you for wanting to help him lose weight, and get healthy…(walking him will do you good too…walking seems to be a great way for everybody to get in shape) :)

Try taking him for more walks, and maybe getting a couple tennis balls or other dog toys and playing fetch and tug-o-war with him. Also make sure since you’re feeding him less that he also gets good quality food, and for treats you could try giving him veggies instead-my dogs love bits of raw carrot, turnip, or a bit of broccoli as a treat. Just ease him into it slowly, just like a human starting a new lifestyle. He will become more active if you keep it up. Good Luck!!! :)

Answer #5

walk him

Answer #6

thank you guys so much for your help. I don’t think the toys would work as hes a bit inactive with those… his mom is a year older and she’s at a perfect weight. Shes overly hyper, strong, and LOVES to play. Thats what I want her son to be like and thats why I want to help him lose weight… I’m not sure how long it will take him… he doesn’t need to lose a bunch but just enough to get more active you know and not have a hard time getting up and down the stairs. I do not want my dog having weight problems when he’s older like my dad’s dog did and he’s at a young age so I want him to live an active life not be inactive at young and old. I also took both of them on a walk over 30 minutes and not once did he feel like stopping… so maybe hes getting healthier quicker than losing weight. I’m not going to give him less food because I don’t want him feeling hungry… I’ll just walk him more like you guys have said and I already only give him like one treat at night and every now and than two and sometimes I’ll break the treat in half.
