Why is my hamster losing weight?

My hamster seems to be loosing weight. She is looking almost sickly and is very bony. I don’t know what I can do to help her gain weight. Here is what I feed her, so if you know anything that I can add or try please let me know: Hamster food mix; Sunflower seeds and some other seeds, Hamster pellits, peanuts, oats and dog pellits I mix in myself. A few drops of cod liver oil over her food once a week. Fresh fruit and veggies daily. Water (obviosly). As treats she gets: Milk once or twice a week. Boiled egg once or twice a week. Bread once or twice a week. Nuts that are not in her food mix.

Answer #1

My cousin used to give them loads of lettuce, cabbage & carrots…

Answer #2

Thanx. She gets many different sorts of veggies and fruit daily. I’m just keeping the green veggies from her at the moment, because they can cause diarrhea if she eats too much of them and that could cause her more harm.

Answer #3

hmm have you spoken to the vet? Maybe the vet can explain why your hamster is loosing weight to begin with. Maybe it is sick & not feeling well? :(

Answer #4

Poor little guy..): What I do to keep baby hamsters heathy and groowing well is I get an eye droper and mix up baby milk powder with all the vitamins and feel it to them.. You are giving her plenty of food and variety, but maybe she needs this. It will really boost her immunsystem..(: Good luck. :D I hope it works out. :D

Answer #5

Is she showing any signs of wetness around her back end?

Answer #6

Try simplifying her diet, if you are feeding her to much of a variety it can cause health problems. Only give her what she really needs. Also maybe phone a vet.

Answer #7

Thank you. I will try this.

Answer #8

Yes. She is. Why?

Answer #9

You’re welcome. :D

Answer #10

I read up on line that this could be a symptom of wet tail, so I’m taking her to the vet.

Answer #11

Thanx for bringing this to my attention.

Answer #12

Went to the vet today and she is now on antibiotics. Vet sais she’ll be better within ten days. :-)

Answer #13
