How do the 10 commandments affect us today?

The ten commandments just give people a guideline on how to lead their lives.

I am NOT a christian or believe in any religion, but common sense tells me to follow most of the commandments. (Not killing, stealing, lying etc).

Many of today’s criminal laws are derived from the Ten Commandments, such as Thou Shalt Not Steal.

The only things at all releveant from the ten commandments to our legal system are do not steal, murder, or bear false witness. And those things are based on common decency and civil rights.

The 10 commandments are the basis of the legal system of an ancient and long dead theocracy. Other than historical value, they have no relevance today. It our society, 6 of the 10 are just plain silly.

The ten commandments are still relevant in Jewish law, but historically there has been concern that they receive more attention than the hundreds of other laws in the Torah. Here’s an interesting article about that:

If you’re non Christian…they don’t.

If you are a Christian…they don’t, as Jesus said something like all old covenants were broken…

…then again, if you are ASKING about the ten commandments, you should know this…unless you are Jewish, in which case, the ten commandments, I think, are still in effect…but, I’m not very up to speed on Jewish theology.
