How can I help my 6 year old son with self-esteem?

One thing I learned in life is that self-esteem and a good attitude are very, very important. I do not want my son to feel like I used to as a child. Does anyone have ideas?

Answer #1

Well make sure how he is doing in school his peers are going to be the ones who lower or increase his self-esteem.

Answer #2

Depends on what he needs help with. Physical, school work, both. I always had low self esteem when it came to class work, but wow did I love pe.

If it’s physical, get him involved with a sport, martial arts are great for that. It’s a small classroom setting so he’ll get a lot of one on one attention.

If it’s schoolwork, find out how he learns. Is he hands on. My 4 year old son has yet to master his ABC’s but can rebuild a car engine. He’s hands on. They all learn differently. I learned by doing, never ever by being told how to do it. So in the way that I learned I made a lot of mistakes so if that the case for him he will need to understand that mistakes are just as important as the right answers.

My 5 year old daughter reads at a second grade level in comparison.

Giving him some kind of responsibilty will help, make sure its not too much for him to handle. When a child accomplishes something, they end up with a sense of worth. Do you have pets? If he can take care of a creature of some kind that depends on him, he’ll feel needed. Be sure to help him out and guide him. Don’t leave it all up to him. Remember to reward the good behaviour, what you focus on is what you will reinforce. Even if he doesn’t get it right all the time, commend him on what he did do right. It’s all about how he sees himself, and he will mirror that from you. 6 yr olds are a lot smarter than we think, they deserve to be able to grow and get the credit for it. Good luck!
