house (potty) training

I have a beautiful boxer that is 6 weeks old. I read in a post made on this site that a boxer should only have to go out once during the night. well I have a problem. I feed him about 9:30 pm, just before I go to bed, and then take him out to go potty. he does, then we go to bed. I put him in his crate and off to sleep we go. he has gotten up at midnight, 2 am, 4am, and 5am. then we get up at 6 to start our day. is this normal? if so, how long should it last. if not, how do I correct it. I have only had him for 3 nights and I am starting to get tired. how will I know when he is potty trained.

thanks keith a

He’s still a baby, probably will have a little difficulty controlling it… Honestly depends from puppy to puppy, once mine was trained (took 3 days), he didnt go at all at night, but it really depends…

well puppies are different. I may suggest feeding him around the time you eat or aaround 5 or 6. does he wake you up? because eventually all dogs slow down to just going before they go to bed and when they wake up.

I would never feed any of my Boxer puppies that late and not expect to be cleaning poop all morning out of the crates or hearing them cry and have to take them out.

As Phrannie said that is correct. Feed the puppy according to the directions on the food label and that is all. Leave down fresh water until I say 7:00 but 8:00 is fine. Take pup out before you go to bed. And as soon as you get up in the morning.

As Harley Schedule, Schedule Schedule! is the thing all dogs including puppies depend on. Stick to the Schedule and you will get this work out. Always use a crate at this age for safety as well as not having to step in wet spots. DO no put food and water in the crate.

I just asked on of the doctors here at work and the average time a dog that age should have to go out is about every 4 hours. you need to set a schedule and stick with it. I would also feed him earlier if you can. If he has to go more then this you may want to have him vet check for a UTI. Once you have a schedule both of your lives will be a lot better, trust me. And yes you can crate train him at this age

That’s not true…or else German Shepherds catch on quick…The total vigilence with my pups ends within two weeks…all going to the door by 10 weeks…tho my brain is still connected to the “housetraining”, and I will take them out if it’s getting to the cutting edge, timewise. Every dog I’ve ever had, has been totally housetrained…once it’s in their head, they will do ANYTHING to hold it, or let you know they got to go.

Patience and absolute vigilence are the keys to total housetraining any dog.

Sorry…the number times a puppy has to go out, does NOT depend on breed…it’s fully dependent on AGE. A 6 week old puppy is going to get up at least one time in the nite, probably two…if you’ve only had him for 3 days, put his crate in your bedroom, and he’ll sleep better.

You need to feed him earlier…like no later than 6:00, and put up the water at 8:00 ish…make sure he gets out right before you go to bed. DO NOT deviate in your feeding schedule, you will be much more able to “control” when he goes.

If you’d waited until this pup was 8 weeks old (as most puppies are when taken to a new home)…you’d only be stuck getting once a night for maybe a week…as it is, “pretend” you have newborn…for that is precisely what you have…and you’re going to be getting up at least once per night for a couple of weeks.

6 weeks old is a BABY ! They have only about 2 seconds between thinking…hmmm I’ve got to potty…and potty. He’s too young to crate train… if you cut off food and water by 7 pm, and play with him and keep him up, till 10ish he’ll probably go to sleep by 10, get you up at 1, 5, then 7… try that schedule till he’s about 10 weeks, and he’ll skip the 1am. Then by 12 weeks old he should be able to skip the 5 am…and stay “quiet” till 7 am.

He isn’t in the “learning” age yet. Their brains don’t “turn on” till 7 weeks..and the “learning “ period is 8-10 weeks old. This is when he’s a sponge, and with gentle repetitions, treats and praise, he can learn come, sit, fetch, shake, down, and stay…very easily. But he’ll still have trouble with potty training… because he really can’t “wait” until he’s about 4 months old… but HEY, I’m guessing YOU were in diapers till you were about 2 YEARS old… so puppies learn FAST ! Comparitively !
