Potty training my boxer

We have had our boxer for 5 weeks and she is now 12 weeks old. she is still not potty trained. she goes outside when we take here (which is about every 30-60 minutes. we watch her like a hawk when she is in the house. but if she has to go, she justs goes in the house. she also cannot make it through the night- not even 6 hours without having to poop and pee. What are we doing wrong? I am feeding her nature’s recipe puppy and she has free access to water all day until 7:00pm. please help!!

Do you only feed her the recommended amount of food three times a day? Do not free feed her.

I have Boxers, they where recently voted the most intelligent of breeds by AKC. Of course many will disagree with this, because many breeds and dogs are so intelligent. But Boxers from birth are indeed intelligent. I have raised and studied these dogs for 10 years.

Here is what you do to house break your puppy. You must crate your pup in a crate that is only big enough to sleep, stand up and turn around in and lay back down in. NO bigger or they will poop in it and go lie in the corner, walk through it and let you clean it up. BUT they will not sleep in it. So only big enough to sleep in.

You then always keep the puppy in the crate or on a leash with you in the room you are in at all times. The pup is not to be running free on it’s own accord. If not with you or on the leash the pup is in the crate. You still take the pup out every hour on the hour at this age during the daylight hours. When you are home. You can back off on this in a few days and go to 2-3- and longer hours. If you are not home the puppy is in the crate, this is for safety as well as house training.

Schedule!! is the key. You can train any dog with a consistent schedule. Dogs have built in time clocks. They are born with them.

Boxers are very good about being constantly by your side or the one they are devoted to. SO if the boxer disappears it is up to something, Pooping somewhere it is not suppose to. At 12 weeks this pup should be ringing a bell telling you it is ready to go out and potty. (Check out the bell by the door training)

Always take your pup out and tell it to potty. Say it urgently! GO POTTY! I have just trained an old (9 year old) kennel Chihuahua to go potty outside on command. They are like impossible to house break at times. This is a dog that lived in a kennel all her life. She will look at me until I tell her to Go Potty and she will go! If she just pees and not potties, I tell her again GO Potty and she will go back to the yard and go potty.

All Dogs are smart you just have to out smart them. Or be as smart as they are. Your Public Library is full of Books on Training puppies, Boxers and Dogs. Check it out. DO a refresher course. You are on the right track you are just missing a step.

P.S. The Boxer may indeed be an intelligent breed but they can be a stubborn dog too. :)

Answer #3

They sure are and they are a head turning dog. Took my 4 year old girl to McDonald’s today. The people were coming to the window saying what a beautiful Boxer she is. She was a stubborn puppy but worth every minute of my time. Hang in there, the devotion and love of a boxer will make all you time and effort pay off.

I would have to definitely agree with you on the stubborn part- but they are such wonderful, loving dogs!
