What are some foods that are high in iron?

At my doctor appointment yesterday my bloodwork came back slightly anemic and i was told that i need to eat more iron rich foods. All she mentioned was leafy greens though….what other foods contain alot of iron?

Answer #1

Liver is one of your best…but…blech…there’s also beef, almonds, tuna, broccoli, beans, also look for iron fortified cereals and pastas

Answer #2

Surprisingly, cereals and grains are extremely high in iron, then there’s also beans and peas. Also, pretty much most vegetables that have a deep and rich colour (green or red) are extremely high in iron content. Beetroot is especially good (my mum likes to make beetroot juice for it’s antioxidants and iron), broccoli and spinach are others. Also to keep in mind is that there are ways to help your body take in iron more efficiently - as you can take in a lot of iron, but your body’s “iron-receptors”, if we may call them that, won’t work as efficiently. A healthy intake of vitamin C will help your body to do that. And there’s the obvious of red-meats, such as beef; and fish, such as salmon.

Answer #3

Spinach and Kale are both very high in iron.

Answer #4

Oh, and since this is “Fun Advice”, I would like to include guns in my list of high-iron foods. :P

Answer #5

Total cereal and liver, dark green veggies like broccolli

Answer #6

Spinach is a really bad source, it contains oxilates, which prevents absorption of iron, other than that you are right.

Answer #7

Liver and other meat Seafood Dried fruits like apricots, prunes, and raisins Nuts Beans, especially lima beans Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach and broccoli Blackstrap molasses Whole grains potato green/red peppers brussel sprouts tomatoe egg yolks artichokes mollusks shrimps sardines liver sausage goose fish paste sesame seeds bran wheat special k cereal bran flakes liquorice cashew nuts paprika cinnamon ground watercress red kidney beans wholemeal bread soy beans almonds hazelnuts dried figs

Answer #8

The best sources of haem iron, which is the most biologically available form of iron, is any internal organ that has some role in processing blood - like the heart, liver and kidneys. They taste pretty bad in my opinion, and you cant eat liver while you are pregnany anyway, because it contains a lot of retinol which messes up the babies development (I dont know about heart and kidney). Red meats are also good. Other sources of iron like from plants and things (there is a pretty extensive list already so i wont mention them!) can be good but you do need to eat more of them, and it is not haem iron.

Answer #9

I’ve heard that molasses has quite a bit of iron also (for a sweeter option)
