Why does most dog food have corn?

Why do most dof food have corn in it? I mean come on, it’s bad for the dog’s skin!!!

Answer #1

Corn is an extremely efficient crop. Plus our government heavily subsidises corn farming. So corn is by far the cheapest grain available. Since corn is so cheap it is the cheapest soruce of carbohydrates and protein so it ends up in almost everythying one way or another.

If you want to read an interesting account of corn look for “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan.

Answer #2

not all dog food has corn in it, it depends on what kind you get. like if you would get the big bags that says rice and beef, everything is not with corn for them

Answer #3

Only about half of the dogfood made has corn, and it’s usually the cheaper brands…Corn is a “filler”…and nothing more…it does nothing for dogs, and many are allergic to it. Look for brands with rice, brown rice, oatmeal, or no grains at all, and your dog will poop less, utilize it’s food better, have a nicer coat and healthier skin. Many of the “good” dogfoods cost only a couple dollars more than the cheap corn-filled stuff. Nutro for instance…or if you have a Costco account, you can buy 40 lbs of VERY high quality Kirland Lamb and Rice, for $20.00…that’s a great price for excellent food.
