If people fear you, they have no respect for you- they are just scared of you. They will probably do stuff for you but as soon as you show a weakness they will bring you down. If people love you, they will do favors unconditionally for you and you will have true friends.

The way I see it, no one is going to throw themselves in front of a bullet because they fear you. Now love on the other hand, people do anything for those they love.
