It is not entirely straightforward.
. In practice it will usually be Jogging, and the typical figures for one hour Jogging are upwards of 500 kCal per hour dependent on your weight and the speed you jog at. . Typical non-competitive swimming tends to be nearer to 300 kCal per hour. However serious swimmers who do vigorous freestyle will be expending around 750 kCal per hour or more. . In Practice, the average person who is just doing a bit of swimming or jogging to lose weight or keep fit is more likely to jog a decent distance and maintain a fairly high heart rate thus expending a lot of calories, ….. . ….. while a similar non-specialist swimmer is not likely to swim vigorous freestyle for very much more than a few minutes during a one hour swimming session. Swimming breast stroke in particular expends much fewer calories than the other recognized strokes. . Depends on several factors, I’d say.

If you go jogging, how fast do you go? Any slopes/ hills? Do you carry anything (like those training ankle- and wristbands filled with metal.)

If you go swimming, how fast do you swim and what stlyle? Do you go in a pool or lake or will you swim in a river or the sea? And what waves and currents exist there?

A slow jog on a flat sidewalk will burn less than a fast one up-hill. If you swim slowly in a pool, that will be less calories than a fast swim or one in troubled waters. Ever tried swimming in waves, even if they’re only 1 yard high? That’s extremely tiring.
