How do you keep a conversation going if you continue to get short answers?

I’m texting a nice friend that I would like to get to know better. However, he likes to reply in short sentences such as “Lol(:” “Both(:” etc. Anything I can say to keep the convo going without it being boring.

Answer #1

Make sure your asking questions that cant be answered with just a yes or no response. Such as - Whats your favorite band and why? Whats your favorite childhoood memory?…just think of questions that require a scentence.

Answer #2

Open ended questions, things that can’t be answered with monosyllable answers. Also, you might want to nicely point out that he’s only giving you one word answers. Sometimes people arent in the mood to talk. Sometimes they’re just shy.

Answer #3

Ask about the other persons’ interests, likes, dislikes, family, if they travel. People love to talk about themselves typically. If it stays short, they probably don’t want to talk at all.

Answer #4

Play truth or dare, ask him or her if they like you, ask why, or why not, ask about their religion… There are plenty of ways to do that…. If it doesn’t work, ask why they keep giving short answers and act hurt (don’t overdo it)

Answer #5

id like to kno that too

Answer #6

ask more complicated questions like just an example “i heard you got into trouble at school who was around you when it happened and why did you do that” but anyway dont ask questions so difficult that they get up and walk away

Answer #7

same as everyone else said but with one little tip avoid yes or no answer questions. Ask who what when where and why if you have to and if they still dont cooperate, ask them the question you just asked us “how can i have a conversation with you if u only give me short answers”

Answer #8

i always play 21 questions, you have to take turns asking each other questions, and it can keep the conversation up.

Answer #9

Ask questions that u won’t get one word answers , like what did u do today ?
