Can I legally stop my 17-year-old from moving out?

My 17 year old daughter wants to move in with her boyfriend. I am totally against this! Can I legally stop her in New York State??

Answer #1

I am 17 at the moment and I am wanting to leave I am looking all over the internet for ways f doing this because I know my mum will not let me go easily. thing is I had moved out to my dads before but had to move back for family issues. I have found out that it is not illegal to move out at any age but under the age of 16 your parents can refuse and you have no choice no matter what but from 16 to 18 as long as the police feel that it is suitable for you to live there then you can stay even if the adult tries to appeal. I am unhappy here and want to live with my boyfriend who is 85 miles away, and from some one wanting the same thing as your daughter I would say to leave your daughter to do her own thing as even though it might go all wrong for her its a lesson she has got to learn and one I’m risking.

Legally:

You must either be the ‘Age of Majority’: The age when a person acquires all the rights and responsibilities of being an adult. In most states, the age is 18 or have an approved ‘Order of Emancipation’ from the Court: When a minor has achieved independence from his or her parents, often by getting married before reaching age 18 or by becoming fully self-supporting.

Hi,

The age of majority (legal age to become an adult) in NY is 18. Therefore, you could legally control her under the law, unless she is emancipated.

Good luck.

Im 20 now and I moved out when I was 17. My reason being was because my dad had a lazy girlfriend that lived with us a and she also had her son living with us. I had to watch her kid and my lil brother all the time. I never got to go out with my friends because my dad and his girlfriend we out all the time. And common I was a teen. I wanted to live my life and have fun. So I met this boy and moved in with him. What I’m getting at here is the reason why I moved out was because I was very unhappy at home and just wanted to leave. Maby your doughter is unhappy at home.Maby because of something going on in the household? Talk to her. Ask her if there is anything that you and anyone else in the hose that is making her unhappy, and how you can change it.

Answer #6

Obviously dec94 has never had kids. I haven’t either, but I did babysitting for yearsss when I was younger. You can’t let a kid do whatever they want, when they want.. and if they screw up, assume they learned from a mistake. There are some life lessons to be learned from experience, and some that are learned through discipline.

It’s not like she touched a hot stove and said “I’m NEVER going to do that again” This is a HUGE thing. It somewhat also depends on what you think of her boyfriend? Legally, you can still control her. If she leaves you can call the cops on her. Once she hits 18 there is nothing you can do.

PEACE TO YOU HAVE A NICE DAY MAM!!!@

Answer #8

u can try and take this to court but basically the jugde might ask ur daughter who she wants to live with since she is 17 and has a voice of her own… i think that u should try and talk to her and ask her y she wants to move out… u should also try to explain to her how u feel about her moving but dont try to be aggressive with it try to be calm because u were 17 years old before… she might change her mind or not it all depends.

Answer #9

You can also look into his age. If he is old enough (over 18) and with her still being a minor (barely) there is the question of statutory rape. Some states look at the girl as being a minor right up to the actual minute that she turns 18. Good Luck

talk 2 him or buy him the thing he always wanted
