Can a pinched nerve in neck create numbness in hands?

I had all the tests last year- for carpal tunnel syndrome, they came back that I had a mild case of carpal tunnel syndrome- I recieved injections, which lessened the numbness- but the pain remained. I then had an mri which came back no damage present. I was rear ended years ago and had my top three or four vertabrae in my neck spun around like quite a few degrees from where they needed to be at. I was seeing the chiropractor for this injury, but never got the vertabrae completely back to where they needed to be. Could this injury be causing bilateral carpal tunnel like symptoms?

I’m a long time computer user and ever since laptops came on the market my neck has taken a sever beating.

I also get numbness from time to time but I do streches and have given up on chiropractors: they talk a good game but they don’t produce results.

Traction, streaching and seeing a physical therepist is the way to go. Stay away from chiro’s, they are correct that you have to open up the joints, but adjustments are not enough: traction, streaching, posture, EXCERCISE and taking breaks is the solution.

Sitting improperly, lack of excercise and going to the CHIRO is not going to fix your problem.

Streach, posture, excercise, breaks neck brace is the way to go. Chiro’s are only good for nerve charts that’s about it!!!

many of the nerves in your neck and jaw run directly down to your arms and in 2 your hands so if the nerve gets damaged in any way it can affect anywhere from the neck to the hand…depending on how severe the damage is can have fatal consequences, some people can become paralyzed from such incidents, but if its only a pinched nerve it should be fine :D

I am having numbness and tingling in my left arm and hand. Although improved from seeing the Chiropractor, he is sending me in for an MRI since it has not gone away. Is this what you are having trouble with?

Whenever I bend over to pick something up, it is so bad I could just about pass out. I am having to learn to bend at the knee again like when I was young and in better shape;)

Answer #4

Yes. My mom had surgery for just that reason last year.

Answer #5

Yeah there is a possiblity that it could be, a friend of mine spun one out of place abit a few years ago and was paralyzed on his entire left side. It took months to heal fully with chiropractors and physicians, but its possible it could be the cause of the CT like symptoms, but don’t worry everything can be fixed in time.

Answer #6

I have been suspecting this ever since my treatment for the ct didn’t get rid of the symptoms, my hands are my life and I guess I will have to go back to the chiropractor and see what they can do about getting things realigned. thank you guys immensely for your input, it is greatly appreciated.!!!

I am having numness-tingling feelings in both my hands. it doesnt really go beyond the wrist and its not total numbness its almost like when you hit yoru funny bone and you get that strange feeling. my hands are not weak but very sore. I had an emg done for carpal tunnel. they said I had mild carpal tunnel. they told me to wear splints when typing. I still have no relief. does this sound like carpal tunnel or somthing else. I am kind of scared. I just started nursing school, and its scary not knowing what is going on with your body

Just saw your question, I hope the condition is better. I experienced numbness in both hands and particullary the little fingers. Orthopedist took X-rays and found that where the nerves leave the C-4, there is a small “hole” of bone. Calcification has built up there and pinching the gangleon of nerves, causing the numbness and sometimes pain in the shoulder and down the arm.

His recommendation, if it gets to the point I can’t tolerate it, the area can be “cleaned”out and room made for the nerves again - layman’s terms that I understood.

It’s been about 1 1/2 years and it seems to be a bit better. I rotate my neck more than I used ot which seems to help. No ‘breast stroke’ swimming, bad for it, tilting the head back. When at the computer, I move about more.

Hope yours is better, enjoyed your photos. Waldo is a guy huh crouching behind the limbs?

Answer #9

yeah, the pain and numbness is in BOTH of my hands, the pain happens from simple things like working my mouse back and forth on the mouse pad. I notice some pain when I use my thumb and hand to pinch something and lift it vertically. normal usage of my hands- like when I am using a hand file to file a project- that motion creates pain, it really has become uncomfortable to do my artwork or any of my other projects, but I have learned to block it out and carry on. looking forward to what the chiropractor can accomplish- anything is an improvement- and I am sure I will feel better with those vertebrae back in alignment.

thanks again for all the input- it is deeply appreciated.
