I’m one of those ‘some people’ - using a combo of baking soda (NOT baking powder) and ordinary salt is an old, old remedy for whitening teeth gradually. The only taste is from the salt.

It’s a super-cheap, safe and gentle way to lighten your teeth gradually. If you use a little toothpaste or mouthwash afterwards, the salty taste goes away.

In fact, for a while some commercial manufacturers of toothpaste were marketing versions that contained baking soda - maybe they gave up when people realized it was cheaper to buy baking soda themselves and forget about the toothpaste.
