Breastfeeding latch

I had my daughter on tuesday. When she latches on it hurts so bad. After about 60 seconds it no longer hurts. Just the initial latch on hurts. She is latched on correct and positioned correct. So I do not understand the discomfort. I don’t have cracked or dry nipples either. It doesn’t hurt when I pump with a hand breast pump just when she latches on. I tried to get ahold of a breastfeeding consultant but turned up empty handed and I can’t find any answers on the internet. Can someone tell me if the latch on pain in normal, if and when it goes away, and what to do to help it. Thanks in advance.

I had it at first with all three of my kids…it did eventually stop hurting. The lactation consultant I talked to told me that it wasn’t “normal” but that the baby was correctly positioned. Every mother I knew that breastfed said it was normal though. Just make sure that your daughter is taking more than just your nipple into her mouth…she needs some of the aureole to breastfeed correctly.

Congratulations and good luck :)

Thanks so much. I’m glad I’m not the only person who had this problem. I’ve tried every position!

1st of all any woman who breastfeeds is a hellofa woman!! I breastfed for 365 days :)AT 1st it hurt bad I grinded my teeth and thought I am no quitter this is the best! And what do ya know the pain went away and it was like 2nd nature. I laid on my right side and she nursed from my left boob and then laid on my left side and she nursed from my right boob! That was the easiest for me good luck :)
