Drinking while breastfeeding

My 21st birthday is coming around the corner and I’m breastfeeding my 3 1/2 month old son still. I’ve drank before and was told that if I pump until my head clears the next day that all the alcohol should be out of my system. Being the way that I am…I’ve made sure to pump at least 3-4 times after I’ve stopped drinking before I let my son breastfeed. My question is…does anyone really know the specifics on when it is safe to breastfeed once you’ve drank alchol?

Answer #1

My baby - wouldn’t risk it for his sake.

Answer #2

Dear fatesarrival, Because of different body weights, metabolism etc. it is impossible to know for sure. You have no clear way of knowing for sure. Sue…good luck

Answer #3

I personally wouldn’t drink.

Here is what I found when I googled it

“Alcohol is metabolized by the liver, where enzymes break down the alcohol. Understanding the rate of metabolism is critical to understanding the effects of alcohol. In general, the liver can process one ounce of liquor (or one standard drink) in one hour. If you consume more than this, your system becomes saturated, and the additional alcohol will accumulate in the blood and body tissues until it can be metabolized. This is why pounding shots or playing drinking games can result in high blood alcohol concentrations that last for several hours.”

Which falls in with what my liver doctor told me when I had a lacerated liver from my accident.

Bottom line, don’t do it.

Answer #4

Eight hours after your last drink (pump every time you would normally breastfeed).

Answer #5

I would ask a doctor about it before I drank any alcohol. You wouldn’t want to risk something so precious.

Answer #6

Alcohol in the milk is the same as alcohol in the blood. There is no need to pump and dump. Just wait at least 4 hours till the alcohol is out of your system. Google alcohol and breastfeeding. The articles are unanimous on this point. Just don’t nurse until the alcohol has been taken care of by your liver.
