Why would anybody make a big deal about Edgar Allan Poe marrying his cousin Virginia?

I mean, I think nobody knew about it at that time even if she was underage, because it could never have done that now with the paparazzies and the laws. What do you think? Tell me please thank you. By the way Poe rules.

I think it’s because back in the olden days it wasn’t so wrong to marry a cousin, it was more of a normal thing for people. But now people think its gross because it’s a family member.

There have been various threads about cousin marriage. Marrying 1st cousins is only illegal in 24 of the 50 states. The states the prohibit marriages between 1st cousins recognize these marriages from other states so worst case a 1st cousin couple who wishes to marry might have to get married in another state. No other country in the world prohibits marriage between 1st cousins. In some areas it is the custom to marry 1st cousins to keep wealth in the family. It has been estimated that in human history 80% of marriages were between cousins. Moreover, there is no religious prohibition of 1st cousin marriage in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, etc..
