Basset hound not eating

My basset hound is pregnant and is very fussy about what she wants to eat and doesn’t want to eat. she’s on royal canin breeder but refuses to eat. we took her for ultrasound and she’s having 7 - 9 puppies, due 12 dec 2009.

What do I do? We’re also giving her pills from the vet for nausea but this doesn’t seem to helping.

Please help!! This pregnancy is driving me crazy. :)

Answer #1

Try giving her some bland food, chicken and rice. Sometimes when dogs are pregnant and refuse to eat it is because the food smells too strong for them…and considering basset hounds have such sensitive smell…no wonder.

maybe try getting sample of different foods see what she likes the most give her canned meat as well but not too much or her poop will become runny. if she likes a certain type of food the most introduce it slowly and give her the meat with her meal… maybe give her some scrambled eggs in the morning… give her a variety of nice foods… I have 11 dogs now and we have just had a litter of bearded collie puppies… we gave our mummy the eggs (make sure they are cooked!) and we’d give her a meat in the evening and just biscuits or lunch. =) x

Thank you Dave!! She’s not just moody - she’s SULKING her way through this. . . . :) Excited about the puppies, but not ever going to put her through this again.

We adopted another basset and got him neutered about a week too late after not being able to decide whether or not we want to breed with them .. . by then it was obviously too late… :)

Can’t wait to see the young ones though!! They look quite active on the ultrasound which is probably why she’s feeling unhappy …

How old is your basset?
