Autism ???

I have a 2 year old nephew, he doesnt talk very much, not very clear. Not very affectionate. When you say his name he doesnt even acknowledge you. His hearing is fine, its been tested. He is not potty trained yet. could he be autistic???

Answer #1

Keep in mind, he’s 2. He might have something he fears, he might have a lot on his mind. If he’s had relatives that are autistic, test him! But it’s not likely he is, there are plenty of autistic symptoms that I haven’t heard like: -Social Anxiety -Crying A-Lot -Talking in funny way -Wants to stay home all of the time. -Hitting a lot, or screaming a lot.

This baby boy, might be shy, or independent.
Get him tested if any more symptoms occur, or you find out it might be a genetic problem, or you are still having fear.

2 year old boys do not potty train as quickly as one might think. His pediatrician should be checking him out for any physical reasons he might not be talking, but all children develop at their own pace and labels should not be put on anyone until they are proven to have not yet reached milestones in their development. Does he have any reason to talk or are his needs anticipated and he just has to grunt ot obtain what he wants? One needs to know all the aspects of development before labeling a child autistic incorrectly.

Answer #3

Those symptoms are symptoms of autism but there are many more symptoms than just not responding to his name to have an autism diagnosis. Make an appointment or ask his parents with a pediatrician.

Answer #4

He could be; those are sometimes indicators. But he could ALSO just be an independent two year old. Not all toddlers are cuddly. And boys typically take until 3 to potty train. So just keep that in mind- every baby is different. If his pediatrician isn’t worried, his parents shouldn’t be yet either. :)
