Why do we have armpit and pubic hair?

Since many people, specially women, shave those parts, when humans further evolve, who knows how many thousands of years from now, will armpit and pubic hair cease to exist?

Answer #1

i think it got something to do with puberty

Answer #2

well possibly not cuz u know we have hair still all over our bodies, just not as much as neaderthals etc. I think we didnt lose our pubic and armpit hair cuz we still need it.

Answer #3

Armpit hair serves as a kind of lubricant ( think long ball bearings ) it is not necessary most of the time but is beneficial when lifting heavy weights, and when the body is sweaty, and also during rapid movement such as running.

Pubic hair serves a similar function during sex, but served our ancestors more than modern day people. a secondary reason for the pubic hair was to protect the more tender tissues from sunburn.

Both are unnecessary today due to inventions of clothing, but care still needs to be taken if you elect to sunbath in the nude. The pubic area should have a healthy amount of suntan lotion to insure it does not burn.

Answer #4

I know, I’m just asking what purpose does it serves since we can live fine without it.

Answer #5

Wow! Perfect! Thank you Dr Bill. :)

Answer #6

Because we and the apes have the same ancestors?

Answer #7

oh idk lol. i wanna know that Lol

Answer #8

So ur saying female weight lifters and such shouldnt shave their pits then? lol….and ewww. heheh

Answer #9

Nobody knows for sure but the most plausible theory that I heard is that our ancestors secreted and were able to smell pheromones in their sweat and that pit and pubic hair by increasing the surface area allowed greater evaporation of pheromones. Humans no longer attract mates with pheromones so pit and pubic hair would be what biologists call vestigial; something we have that no longer serves a purpose but did in our past. Vestigial traits can last millions of years. Flightless birds still have vestigial wings.

Answer #10

No, it benefited our ancestors, but is no longer necessary
