I need to add that most breeders have the first shot administered by their Vet to your puppy at 6 weeks. This is a good breeder. That is also why I mentioned some breeders are even starting as young as 5 weeks of age.

Puppies get their immunities from their mother. If the mother stops nursing the pups early, some breeders have decided to start vaccinations early. I don’t because I never remove my puppies from their mom until they leave for their new homes. So I start my vaccinations at 6 weeks on the nose. I use to administer the vaccinations myself. But my Vet (who does not charge much) lectured me on the terrors of getting bad serum etc. so I let him do it now and that way he can check my pups. again at 6 weeks.

Besides money is not an issue with me on the puppies health. If you ever see a sick puppy or even a sick dog die, you never ever want to witness it again if you can avoid it as any cost.

Bordertella which is the kennel cough vaccine is a mixed review. Discuss this option with your Vet. It is a live virus and some breeders are dead set against using it.

I have a pair of Boxers that spent the night in the animal shelter once and they picked it up. Kennel cough that is. It sounds horrible, you think they are dying. The dog is not. It is like whooping cough. Anyway. I now give all my dogs bordertella (kennel cough) vaccinations, each year, just to keep my dogs from coming down with ever again. My usage of it is a safety comfort usage for my dogs.

Well really you don’t need all this information. You just need to know the importance of going to your Vet and getting all you puppy’s shots and getting them on time.

Go to your Vet and he will set your puppy up on a puppy program to have a series of vaccinations that cover, distemper-hepatitis, canine parvo-virus, para-influenza, corona-virus.. The first vaccination must be given at 6 weeks (some even are starting sooner) 9 weeks 12 weeks and at the 12 weeks the rabies vaccine is given. all very important. So important that thousand of dogs die due to not getting their vaccinations annually.

Wormings are started by the breeder when the puppies are 2 weeks old. Administered every two weeks until 8 weeks of age when they go to the new families. At that time your puppy’s Vet will put your puppy on something that will be given monthly to cover heartworm and other wormings.

Since you seem to be new at having a puppy make sure you follow your vet’s plan. I don’t know Downer’s Grove but the program for your pup is the same where ever you live. Vaccinations are not very expensive, compared to you puppy dying a horrible death.
