Should I add volunteer experience instead of work experience when filling out job applications?

Just wanting to know when filling out a job application because I have no work experience, and only have volunteer experiences. and EVEN when the application does not ask for volunteer experience, should I still add in my volunteer experience to the job application?

Answer #1

If it was me I would add as work experience, but also specify it was on a volunteer basis. Showing a company that have been prepared to do volunteer work can only go down well. It looks imnpressive on a CV/résumé. Any work experience, whether paid or as a volunteer is positive.

Answer #2

Apologies for the typo’s, yes, add it to the application under work experience, it will be a good source for references too.

Answer #3

Only if it is relevant. I’ll give you an example, if you volunteered at an animal shelter and walked dogs, that isnt exactly going to be relevant if you are applying to be an administrative assistant. If you volunteered to do paperwork and are applying to be an administrative assistant, that is relevant. Otherwise, you can put it on your CV/Resume.

Answer #4

What I did on my resume was put any volunteer things I’ve done (because I never had any work experience).. so yes, since you have no experience, putting volunteer things would be ok because they are as close as you can get to legit work experience…

oh and good luck ;)
