How do I get my 5 month old lab puppy to listen to me?

He likes to play a lot so he doesn’t listen much. I have tried to teach him tricks but the only thing he can do is fetch because all he does is try and find the treat if I show it to him or he tries to chew on my clothes.

young puppies are always really hyper so it’s kind of hard to make them listen. you could always go to dog training or read books/watch youtube videos on how to train your dog. make sure to teach him good manners and praise him when he does good and enforce discipline when needed. :)

Answer #2

Good advice from Kahili. But you need to teach your dog basic discipline first: To come when you call him, to walk along with you (“heel”), to settle down and sit quietly when you tell him, etc. Then you can worry about tricks.

Answer #3

He knows all of that but to sit quietly

Answer #4

How many baby/toddlers listen to you? It all takes training and patience, patience, patience till they understand you.

Answer #5

Try using positive techniques in your training sessions. use easy to chew treats like cheese bits or hot dogs. something that goes down easy but won’t give him/her an upset tummy. Use his or her name in a positive tone, never use the dogs’ name when scolding it. you’ll only teach it to fear you and it’s name. whenever you are training a dog be positive, remember it’s not the dogs fault if he didn’t listen the first or fifth time, you just need to keep trying. Since your pup is five months you want to keep training sessions short. Make things fun and happy.

Answer #6

Good, then that’s the next “trick” to teach him {:^)
