USB Troubleshooter http://www.usbman.com/Troubleshooter%20General.htm

This tool will allow you to determine the state of your USB ports: USBDeview http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html It will show past or present connections to ports.

If your laptop is newly bought, you should consider returning it to the store for repair.

If you have a printer connected to your laptop, unplug it from your PC and then turn off your PC. Unplug the power cord of your PC from the wall outlet for 2 or 3 minutes (this drains the power from everything). Plug it back in and boot up your PC. Then try using your other USB ports. Are they working now?

If you have a laptop, a similar solution to the one above is the following: A simple advise to all Laptop owners without needing to reinstall or updating or damaging your BIOS.

Instructions:

  • Unplug all the cables that are connected to your laptop
  • Remove the battery of your laptop
  • leave it for 1 min. and dont be hasty
  • Plug everything back and turn your laptop on. Please remember, Old HPs, VAIO and some Dells will not reset the device state UNTIL you take the battery out for 1 min or more. There is always power going through it. That’s why your laptop will fully drain a battery even on ‘shutdown’ after a few days while not being connected to the A/C outlet.

If all USB ports are not working try to upgrade the chipset drivers.

You should read your motherboard manual.

Try doing this too: Go to DEVICE MANAGER. Disable ALL UNIVERSAL BUS PORTS. Enable THEM AGAIN.

Microsoft has a few answers, and a ‘fix-it’ gadget - that you could try, ( I have added that to my little toolbox - I also saved a copy of my toolbox on CD, as well as on a usb flash drive). Go to this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900

Did you already update windows? Odds are, one of the drivers are in conflict with another.

If you did that, check the manufacturer’s docs to see if your devices are compatible with windows 7…sometimes when you have the latest OS, you get incompatibility issues with hardware.

Driver updates solve the problem about 90% of the time, especially via the manufacturers site.
