Why is water being a solvent the best property of water?

My science teacher said that water being a solvent is the best property of water can someone explain why? Cause I thnk changing states is the best. Please help me understand why he thinks that.

Answer #1

Ya, waters best property is being a solvent because it is a much more rare property than changing states. Also water is important because it is a low acidity solvent with a reg. Ph rating of 5.

Answer #2

The most important feature of water is that it gets less dense when it freezes, which allows it to float. If it weren’t for that, the oceans would freeze solid from the sea floor up, which would eventually cause most of the liquid water on the planet to accumulate at the poles in the ice caps. This would make all of our oceans significantly smaller, which would in turn reduce the surface evaporation that supplies the world’s rain and turn most of the planet into an uninhabitable desert. No oceans: no rain. No rain: no plant life. No plant life: no animal life.

@Mikeh: Water is the only substance that exists in all 3 states of matter in nature. Also, no one has been able to solidify Helium, even when cooled to within a small fraction of a degree above Absolute Zero.

Answer #3

Everything changes states, not just water.
