Why do some religious people make extraordinary claims?

Recently, a member of the religious community made the following comment:

“… The fact is religious especially the Christians can and do make the positive affirmation that GOD EXISTS. They offer evidences for the existence of God…”

I was delighted and responded thus:

“I am delighted! What is it? Share this with us! Do NOT let us down! If you have verifiable empirical evidence of God’s existence, I will convert myself without delay!”

So far, no response was provided. I am disappointed…

Why do some religious people make extraordinary claims?

Answer #1

because there quite blantantly trying to scare you into beleiveing in the same bullsh*t they do

Answer #2

what is your PROOF that GOD does not exist? oh, you don’t have any either!!! SHUT UP

Answer #3

They’re saying ‘they themselves’ are the evidence - the Holy Spirit has taken up residence inside their heart, their life - of course you can’t relate or comphrend, it hasn’t happened to you (Salvation) - just because it hasn’t happened to you, doesn’t make it any less true - don’t be narrow minded - all your experience / thoughts / your heart are of this world - their guiding influence is not of this world, it’s of Heaven / Jesus Christ - you have to know HIM in order to understand - Salvation is definitely Extraordinary !!…nice attempt to put Christian’s down though, hopefully one day your you’ll open your heart - your choice, rather than have it wax cold, to the Great “I AM” - many can’t simply grasp that Jesus IS the only way - please don’t belittle other people’s experiences, makes one look bad, Christian’s are people just like you, they have strengths and weaknesses - not perfect, but Forgiven, please don’t be narrow minded, Amen !!

well you know something…if you don’t want to believe, you probably never will no matter what any of us do or say.

Now I just say look at the life of Fred Hoyle…the guy who came up with the big bang theory. He got to the point where he thought that his own theory was ridiculous. He was a scientist and astronomer and basically came up with the probability of all this being by chance is ridiculous. And he gave some opinions about evolution as well. I don’t know if he ever became a Christian but he got to the point of believing in God.

Livia437,

Have you proof that Dwyfach, sagarmatha, isis, mina, jupiter, shiva, allah, zeus, miyolangsangma, rongo, wandjina, cai chen, sarpanitum, khan bhogda, daikoku, thor, hiiakawawahilani, inti huayna capac, eeyeekaldu and al-la do not exist? If not, what does that demonstrate?

The subject of proof-of-non-existence has been argued several times before on this site. Please, refer to that.

Answer #7

Amblessed, reading your answer again; so far, you have only provided evidence indicating that many people are religious.

The idea that a deity takes residence in one’s heart, is once again an extraordinary claim and can not be taken seriously without any further verifiable definition.

Answer #8

I can provied evidence but it seems no matter how much I show people another question comes to them about why God cannot exist, it comes down to faith, If you have any questions on faith or evidence of Gods existane PLEASE ASK, I want to help

Answer #9

this is a points less statement, in fact I was talking about this same issue with my cousin. he says how cant people believe God exists, you can see Gods creations and you can see the proof in the bible and science. I told him this is b/c u (him) dont understand that there are equally many points that prove God exist as prove God doesnt exist. From a logical christian point (im a christian) from the start after the fall of men there was a 1-1 ratio, God (to believe in God) and the devil (to believe in everything/anything but God). the number got higher over time but the ratio never changed (example we could say we now have a 1million-1million ratio, which is the same thing as 1-1 ratio). so people who say this are a little miss guided. you can prove God exist, that why you have faith in something you can see (now through your faith you will believe in God as fact, but still cant prove he exists). so if anyone is looking to have proof of God before they follow him, sorry thats not the point at all. you believe but have some doubt, however even faced with doubt you still believe.

Mamak,

“…What the? Mookooo keekee kaka em kee kee. I’m outta here…”

I guess that your reaction refers to the list of deities that I printed above. It is a small selection of the thousands of gods that are worshiped by faithful people just as sincere about there god as you are about JHWH.

Please, ask yourself why you reject even the smallest notion that one (or more) of these gods could actually exist. And, I assume that you have rejected all of them without making even the smallest effort to understand the claims made by their faithful.

Some of these religions have doctrines that require faith in very unusual supernatural phenomena. Your religion is not different in that respect and I make an effort to understand how and on what basic natural grounds (law of physics perhaps?) I should believe or reject the claims that are made by some of your fellow christians (virgin birth, surviving one’s own death, residence of an omniscient deity in one’s heart, turning water into wine, unicorns, angels, pantheon of saints, sacrament of the Host, apparitions, etc.).

From my point of view, I am confronted with many religions. And so are you. And you reject most of them. So far, I can not justify not to reject just only one more religion than you do.

Answer #11

Probably for the same psychological reasons that many people who feel deeply convinced about their beliefs (whether religious, political, ethical/moral, etc.) do - they simply can’t grasp that theirs is not the only way.

They also often tend to be sadly lacking in a sense of humour, so I wouldn’t expect too much in the way of an answer, if I were you.

Answer #12

Prinka, Please post your answers on this tread.

Amblessed, please read the question as it is written down and DO NOT LET US DOWN! AGAIN!

Answer #13

Empirical evidence doesn’t happen in religion. No way can your sense of belief be based on evidence of any kind. It is simply belief and if you aren’t open to it then it doesn’t exist for you.

Answer #14

“They’re saying ‘they themselves’ are the evidence - the Holy Spirit has taken up residence inside their heart, their life - of course you can’t relate or comphrend, it hasn’t happened to you (Salvation) - just because it hasn’t happened to you, doesn’t make it any less true - don’t be narrow minded - “

So in that case, Muslims are proof that the god of Islam exists and that the Torah is accurate, Hindi are proof that the Hindu pantheon exist, and so forth. They can’t all be right - and you can’t use special pleading to claim that only christians are evidence for their god.

Answer #15

What the? Mookooo keekee kaka em kee kee. I’m outta here!

Answer #16

because “ordinary” claims are dull and ignorant maybe? extraordinary is of the absolute certainty that you are not ordinary but rather as it is written …

And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will.

We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified.

What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
