Do you think religious people are narrow minded?

When it comes to questions on evolution vs creationism, should religious people take notice of advances in science & basic knowledge which clearly disprove holy text? Or do you think they believe science is evil, and put upon Earth by the devil himself to discredit their GODS?

Answer #1

You can’t make a generalization like that. Some religious people are narrow minded; some non-religious people are narrow minded.

Trying to use science to discredit religion and vice versa is a loosing game. The two schools of thought have completely different rules. That is why trying to integrate them gives us things like Intelligent Design that is neither good science nor good religion.

Most Christians I know have no problem integrating evolution into their religious worldview. Their faith does not require every word of the Bible to be literally true. They see science as answering mundane truths and their relgion answering higher truths so the two do not have to agree. They leave room for symbolism, allegory, and metaphor in the Bible rather than accepting everything at face value.

The best I can tell Biblical literalists are a very vocal minority among Christians. I don’t believe that Biblical literalists are necessarily narrow minded in all things. My boss is a Biblical literalist who believes the cosmos is thousands rather than billions of years old. He shows a great deal of intellectual curiosity on a great number of subjects so I wouldn’t call him narrow minded.

Answer #2

We are called everything in the book, so why not narrow minded… We don’t mind. Gods people thruout history have chosen to believe his truths over everything else, and they still do so today. They have given their lives for the truth that is written within the pages of the bible. They have chosen death, rather than disbelieve what is written. So, if that is called narrow minded, so be it. We believe what we belive, and we refuse to be shaken from it. We choose to live our lives in obedience to God, rather than man. We believe that all true scientific evidence, proves that God is real, rather than the other way around, but, we do not need this proof, we have all we need within. When God touches your life, you will never be the same again, and nothing can persuade you otherwise. If everyone that believes that God is not real, would spend half as much time, seeking him, as they do trying to discredit him, it would be amazing what would happen. Because he opens himself up to those that seek him with a pure heart. He wants to be an active participant in our daily lives, and will be, if we invite him in, he will come to live with us, in Spirit. Knock and the door shall be opened unto you, seek and ye shall find.

Answer #3

Sure we are. . . almost as narrowminded as Atheist.

Answer #4

I have noticed that the Asker of the Original Question ask such questions for little more reason that to rip and tear the thought of those that answer apart seeking to humiliate and discredit their heart felt religious beliefs.. That in it’s self is a good example of a Very Narrow mind.

Answer #5

I stand by my point that one can’t make generalizations about religous people.

I did ignore your asking what we thought about religious people. You are seeking opinions rather than the truth. In my opinion religious people are not as a category closed minded.

Answer #6

I don’t think he was making a generalization, but he does have a point, most narrow-minded paople are in fact the very highly religious ones. It’s the GOD is the almighty and we should hide from his wrath. Also change is bad and let’s stick with what we know.

Answer #7

Well, I don’t always agree with filetofspam but on this one I think his answer is great! I don’t ‘disbelive the Bible’ when I believe that God created the world as scientists tell us. I just interpret his word differently to the Christians who call themselves creationists.

Answer #8

My philosiphy is that God created the earth in a scientific way so that the future could have somthing to do other than kill the Sh*t out of each other in war. Because if you really think about it the bible and science can go hand in hand.

Answer #9

Sometimes its better NOT to quote: ‘make up your mind’

We’re not required to have an opinion on everything.

Answer #10

Yes they can, and some are. But they don’t have the corner of the market on that either. ALL people can and sometimes are very narrow minded.

Answer #11

* is it possible to repopulate the world with 2 animals of each species?

Is it possible to Repopulate the world with a 1 single celled organism? I really doubt it. . . .

Your point is meaningless.

Answer #12

Actually this is a subject close to my heart since my mom is highly religious and I’m not quiet convinced. My mom and I had disagreed on a lot of things, and I do believe that religion does cloud people’s judgment. I wouldn’t say that all of them are like that, but unfortunetly being raised around people who look at church so closely, I have been convinced that religious people are in fact very narrow-minded. P.s. when I was in Middle School, I had asked my religion teacher how would she explain evolution and if we came from eve and adam why do all of us look so different? She had told me it was a sin to asked questions like that. (maybe she just doesn’t have the right answer, where a scientist actually does.)

Answer #14

Let me rephrase the question in a way that people (in general) would read it:

“Do you think religious people (in general) are narrow minded?”

Yes, it is in fact a generalization of some sort. To answer your question, I do think religious people (in general) are narrow-minded. I also think nonreligious people (in general) are just as narrow-minded. Very rarely have I met nonreligious people who have weighed in every possibilities before they decide to… not be religious. Now that’s what I call being narrow-minded.

So in conclusion: you are narrow-minded unless you agree with me.

Answer #15

Do you think religious people are narrow minded?

Some are, some aren’t…

This answer also applies to similar questions, such as:

‘Do you think non-religious people are narrow minded?’

or better still…

‘Do you think PEOPLE are narrow minded?’

Answer #16

haha so true but everyone is afraid of their beleifs being challenged humans are gay like that

Answer #17

Most of us are narrow minded. We want to see only our own point of view.
There are many narrow minded religious people and there are many narrow minded people opposing religion. In general I would say there are far fewer open minded people than narrow minded people on either side. People who are willing to look at both sides of the issue “before” they make up their mind. And fewer yet are those individuals that are willing to take another look at the opposing views every once in a while to make sure their views are still valid.

shakes head

Answer #19

I don’t think it’s a question of being religious at all. As others have pointed out, many religious people are very open-minded and well-educated.

The people who either can’t or won’t face the facts typically seem to be either a) those who don’t understand how science works and what constitutes “evidence” or b) those who are so afraid of change that they cling to their traditional, simplistic understanding of things regardless. Naturally, these categories can overlap and, of course, not everyone fits into them perfectly. This is just based on what I have witnessed.

Answer #20

ahh.. religion is NEVER easy to talk about without getting into arguments. well I am a COMPLETE and TOTAL christian. but I make mistakes everyone makes mistakes and when I see someone doing something stupid I give them my advise and let them diside for them selves. if I see gay people walking around holding hands im not going to make a huge scene, I dont agree with it but heck I dont agree with a lot of straight peoples decisions either. and about abortion and everything I think it just depends on the situation and what the people are going through…
