Why did Voldemort go after James in the first place?

Okay, so I know Voldemort wants to kill Harry Potter and everything. But I was just reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and it said “It must have been the finest moments of your life, telling Voldemort you could hand him the Potters.”(Sirius to Wormtail) Like, what did Voldemort have against the Potters that made him want to kill them?

Answer #1

Harry potter and the order of the phoenix

“The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches…born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies…and the dark lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the dark lord knows not…and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives…”

Answer #2

because there was this prophecy that said that a baby boy born in july will grow up with the power to beat voldemort. so voldemort took it to mean harry and he wanted to kill him to prevent that.

Answer #3
