Who has ideas on what's wrong with my dog?

I noticed lately that my dog, a purebred yellow lab who is guaranteed against hip displaysia, can barely walk up stairs—he acts stiff, he doesn’t like playing ball long (his favorite thing), and when I run my hands from his shoulders to his anus, he drops his hind end when I get close to his rectum, as though it hurts or will hurt him. He’s only six and in great shape, although he has a small tumor, probably lipoma, in front of his left back leg. I scheduled a vet’s appointment but I wanted other opinions. Thank you!

Well it seems it could be this supposed limpoma that’s causing him pain. I think it was something in the breeding (maybe the fact he’s purebred and the dysplasia has been bred out?) but it is legal and I do trust what the vet’s and everyone’s told me. Thank you guys for your help. His appointment is next Saturday.

I have NEVER heard of a Lab being gaurenteed against hip displacia. In fact my Dad breeds them and he said that there is no way to avoid it in Labs. Tumors are also very common in Labs. When is the last time you had his Anal glands squeezed? My fathers favorite lab has to get his done all of the time. I dont know about your dog but that may be a factor too. Also depending on how long it has been going on, something could be blocking his colon or rectum, and it may be very pain ful. No matter what , when it comes to the ones we love, better safe then sorry, go to the vet. I wish you luck with your baby!

He’s in pain in this hind legs are you sure he’s guaranteed against hip displaysia? Let the vet sus it out. When I done my vet nurse degree I was told that A little bit of information can be quite dangerous. So beware what other advise people may give you . .

A breeder can only guarentee so much…usually there is a guarentee for only the first two years of a pup’s life…Even the best breeders in the world, with the best dogs, can have a case of displaysia show up in a pup out of a great litter.

Your dog could have a mild case of displaysia, and that’s why it’s taken this long for it to show up…or he may simply beginning to get arthritus. The pain may also be in his back …spondlyosis is an over growth of the vertebrae…many breeds can get that.

The only way to know what’s going on is get him in for xrays…once you find out there are a LOT of things you can do to make his life continue to be a great one. If he’s overweight, put him on a diet…make sure he gets moderate exercise, but not too athletic (like frisbee or something)…swimming is great! There are NSADS (doggie aspirin) for dogs, too…for times when he’s in pain.

The tumor shouldn’t be causing him much trouble unless it’s gotten very large.

Xrays…they will tell all.
