Which bird is best for families?

My mom said when we get our new house that I can get as many pets as I want I currently have one (maltese it’s a dog). I’ve been looking at some birds & I like the following: Quaker (monk) parrot, budgerigar, african grey ( Congo African Grey Parrot),& gouldian finch. I really like all of these but I don’t want to get a big bird but the african grey is so beautiful. it’s hard to choose one I really need to choose one for now I don’t want to get a lot of animals at once. So which one do you think is best for families?

Thanks! =)

Answer #2

lol, you’re welcome! I still think they’re amazing pets to have, when you’re older and a little more settled and stuff…

Zebra Finch, they are small and not to noisy. They are really enjoyable to have around. I have a male and female pair and I love them they are so cute! Theres many different finch to choose from so that just depends on which you find more appealing. My male finch does the woody wood pecker laugh its hilarious!

Yea the Zebra finch looks very beautiful but on wikipedia they say there “Zebra Finches are loud and boisterous singers” Well I really don’t care about noise so now it’s between the Zebra finch & parrot. It’s VERY likely that I’m getting the Zebra finch cause there small. Thanks so much! =)

Parrot - they’re awesome! (And I edited the links out of your question because we don’t allow links in questions unless they go to another part of FunAdvice)

I would not get a Quaker or any other medium to large parrot at this time in your life. They, like the African Grey, require a lot of time and attention and have a relatively long life span. They develop behavioral problems if you don’t give them the attention they need and the cost of the cage and food is just the beginning of expenses associated with parrot ownership. They become bored with their toys so you are constantly buying new ones - and the good ones are not cheap! It’s just not fair to get a pet that will bond with you and then leave them when you go off to college, get married, have kids, etc. It’s a longer commitment than a child. A child goes away to college - a parrot is a three-year old forever. And the vet bills…a dog or cat vet bill is nothing compared to a certified bird vet bill!

I have an african grey, I think they’re amazing, but they are fussy birds, it’s not like having another pet, they’re like little kids, they need a lot of attention and you have to change their food a couple of time a day (they wont eat if there’s remains on top of their food and they’re messy eaters), cleaning their cage and stuff, it’s a lot of work… also it’s a 30+ year commitment, what happens if you go away to college? I’d stick to smaller birds so you can have two and they can keep each other company…

I have a grey, they are very messy and normally cling to one owner. They do however talk to the family. I have a grey who is 3 years old and has a 200 word vocab. The problem with them is they are smarter then you could imagine, I had to throw away 3 expensive cages because he was able to disassemble them. Now he is in a cheap cage being held together by clamps (I am serious). Another disadvantage is they need puzzles not toys. Most greys will self mutilate themselves if they are not stimulated or loved enough. A chunk of wood and some kind of a puzzle that is hard for even you to solve would be a great way to curb his destructive behavior. Also place him in the living room next to the television if possible, otherwise he will start begging for attention. Another good bird for the family is a Senegal, they are smart colorfull birds can get along with the entire family. They are the clown of all birds, bright colors and love to play. Another clown of all birds that is a VERY good family pet is the Cockatoo (the big white ones) I had one that would chase my neices around the house when they were 3 years old. Every time one would fall he would stop and wait for them to get up then chase them some more. They are what I would call the closest thing to a Dog. They have some speech capabilitys but not much. They love to dance.
