Where did God come from?

How did God come to be? And why and how does he exist? And how and why does he create things? And how can he exist instead of nothing?

Answer #1

FunAdvice you posted a Bible verse: “Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, And the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, And the earth was full of his praise.”

I, for some reason, could not find that verse. If it is not too much trouble, could you please post it here? Thank you.

Answer #2

“I don’t think we really need to know, at the moment.”

Well, I suspect there were quite a few priests and bishops who said the same thing to Copernicus and Johannes Kepler when they started asking questions about the universe .

Answer #3

I remember watching a Christian show once and there was like 3,600 people or more singing and praising God. I at that moment I thought about all the people in the world that must be praying to God right at the same moment.

I looked at my Husband and said if God didn’t exist, that much energy would create him.

What if we are the energy that creates God and He us?

Just a thought

I have read the bible from start to finish.

“In the beginning” is a great start, but there is very little detail about how god actually did it. Everything seems magically created from nothing.

Then he quickly moves on to tempting the first two people ever created by placing the “tree of knowledge” in the garden and sending Satan down as punishment knowing full well what would happen (being omniscient).

So things start going badly. Cain offers bad sacrifices, people are getting drunk and having sex with family members (who else is there?), and death is all around. Being dissatisfied with how things are going, god decides to kill everyone except one guy and his family in a great flood. It does not go well - Noah gets drunk as soon as he hits dry land.

A few years pass and much smiting is done. God is busy casting plagues on his enemies, throwing fire and brimstone at evil cities, turning people into pillars of salt, drowning armies, etc.

So one day he decides to impregnate a virgin (no one bats an eyelid), and take on human form to lead a perfect life. He walks around preaching, healing the sick, feeding people, walking on water, then is crucified by the powers at be. He suffers horribly for the sins of mankind (which were inflicted by himself at the start) to give people a CHANCE at avoiding the eternal punishment he himself imposed for disobeying him after the whole tree / Satan incident. Of course he know all this was going to happen - being omniscient and all.

Still billions die because they do not believe in the right god, or believe in the wrong version of him, or don’t believe at all - yet he does nothing because he loves us (or he only helps those with REAL faith - but only to cure them of warts, or give them a parking space).

Seems like a ridiculous storey to me.

Answer #6

Nothing finite can be infinite (eternal). Since the universe is made of finite things (matter, time, space), it therefor must be created by something without time (timeless), thus making it eternal. If it is eternal, it must be infinite, and if its the Creator, it must be God.

The universe changes, and time is the measure of change. How many changes have happened before right now? If you claim an infinite number of changes (which is impossible because you can not have an infinite amount of finite things), it is a logically impossible to conclude we could ever have reached this moment in time. In a world of cause and effect (which we live in), there can not be an infinite regress (an infinite amount of cause and effect reactions to get to a certain cause).

Allow me to rephrase. Imagine that the Earth orbits the sun every 365 days (it does). Now, on Mars, a year is much longer than an Earth year, being 687 Earth days (basically double). So, for every 2 years of Mars, Earth has circled the sun approximately 4 times. Now, imagine that this has been going on for eternity. By your logic, they would both have circled the sun the exact same amount of times, because its been going on forever (this is clearly impossible). This shows the impossibility of an infinite regress, whereby there could not have been an infinite amount of (x) before right now, in a finite universe based on time.

Now, back to God. God exists outside of time, in Eternity. God created time, and time is irrelevant to Him. God is Eternal, not created. Firstly, you have 2 choices; either everything came from nothing (which is impossible), or something always existed and created us. You have no other choice. Take a moment to think about that, remembering that it can not exist in time, that would be impossible. Time can not be eternal.

This thing that always existed would be considered Eternal, having transcended time, space, and matter, being everlasting, having always existed. If you argue this is impossible, I would argue the contrary; it is impossible for this Eternal ‘thing’ to not exist, because the alternative is that nothing existed, which could only produce nothing. So, something always existed, and is therefor Eternal.

Now, for something to be Eternal, it can not consist of time, because time must have had a beginning. We exist in a universe of causality, so an infinite regress is impossible; there could not have been an infinite amount of time before right now, because we never would have reached this moment in time. That means time had a beginning, and whatever created time exists without time, beyond time, in timelessness; Eternity.

So, this Eternal Creator, created time, and the universe. This Eternal Creator clearly is extremely powerful, because the energy of the trillions of stars in the known universe were created by this Creator. And obviously, the Creator is extremely intelligent, having created an intelligent being such as mankind and a world in which to populate with it.

Answer #7

The Universe is not eternal. It had a beginning. The Universe always existing is not scientific. Matter, time, and space are finite and had a beginning. The Universe is dependent on time. Einstein showed that time and space are manifestations of the same thing; spacetime. Spacetime is finite and had a beginning. Time is dependent upon space and cannot be separated from it. Similarly, space cannot exist without time. Time is essential to measure anything. Without it, space cannot be measured, and cannot exist. Because spacetime is finite matter itself also has to be finite. Einstein showed that matter is a manifestation of energy. Without space there would be nowhere for energy to manifest into matter. Without time, when do you put matter? Matter, time, space, and energy are all dependent upon each other. The Universe could not have existed without time. This throws off the Universe existing as a singularity. The Universe had to have had a beginning because time had a beginning. The Universe could not have come about by itself. It had to be created.

In advance of matter and spacetime there was nothing. How can something come from nothing? There is absolutely no way. Something had to have existed prior to matter and spacetime. This something can only be God. Was there a point in time when he was created? Time began a finite amount of time ago. Prior to the beginning of time there was nothingness. There was no time. God existed prior to time. Therefore, there was never a point in time when he was created. He always existed. He exists outside of time and is eternal. God is not limited to matter and spacetime because he created these things. He is not bound by the Laws of Physics. He is all powerful. Because God is not consisted of matter he is immaterial. He cannot be seen, touched, tasted, or smelled. Because he is not limited to space he is omnipresent. Finally, because God exists outside of time he is eternal. He sees the past, present, and future at the same instant. Also, God can never be measured or proven scientifically because he is not consisted of matter and spacetime. You cannot understand God with science. The only way you can know God is by believing in him with your heart and soul. You must have faith in him.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

anyway egg, I’ve said lots about God and you’ve been there to see everything I’ve said so please forgive me if I cut this post short. Maybe I need a break or something…I don’t know. It just gets tiring trying to help people know the Father when all they want to do is argue

Answer #9

All right - please explain what you mean by ‘truth-seeker’.

Seeing as though you put it in quotes yourself I am interested to hear the answer.

Answer #10

Believers will say that god did not come from anywhere - that he is eternal, outside of space and time, unchanging, alpha and omega, a to z.

These answers make as much sense as saying the universe was always here - except we actually have evidence there IS a universe and it is much simpler than an omniscient, omnipotent creator must be.

Believers should be willing to show a way to differentiate an eternal universe from one created by a god, run their experiment, and prove their case. So far none has, probably because belief in god come down to a matter of faith.

In addition, such evidence of a creator god does not prove any one god in particular. To move from this deist position to a theist one where Allah, Zeus, Vishnu, or Yahweh (to name a few) are responsible for these acts requires even more evidence.

I can not even conceive of a way to manage either of these feats.

Answer #11

A “Truth-seeker” is someone who deeply, sincerely desires to know the REAL truth about the world we live in. Not what the scientists say or what the teachers say or what the preachers say. They desire to know for themselves if there is or is not a being that created our world…and us and everything else.

If a person is a “truth-seeker” he will reach deep down in his soul and lay it bare at the feet of Jesus. They will ask Him “If you are there, if you are real then help me to know that you are real!” The person who does this and is open to the possibility of there being a Creator, He will answer.

Be prepared because it may be quite dramatic. It’ll change their life and they won’t be the same again.

Answer #12

“God does not reveal Itself because God exists outside of the universe and time.”

Then how does something outside of space and time affect anything inside?

“God is not infinite nor finite, God just Is.”

Statement without evidence.

“We, being part of the universe, can not see God because we can’t see outside of the universe.”

So we cannot know of there really is a god there or not. Nor could any evidence of one be present.

“We can only perceive that there is a God that caused the universe to come into existence”

And how do we “know” that?

Furthermore, who is to say that an even higher power created the god that created us? Where does the madness end?

Answer #13

I think the universe = ‘God’. Or maybe more specifically, but less understandable: I think existence = ‘God’.

Answer #14

God does not reveal Itself because God exists outside of the universe and time. God is not infinite nor finite, God just Is.

We, being part of the universe, can not see God because we can’t see outside of the universe. We can only perceive that there is a God that caused the universe to come into existence.

It is our mis-perceptions of God and the need for a “super King” or “super father” that grants all the meddlesome attributes to the God which we perceive.

“Has God been around forever? And please don’t use the ‘God invented time’ or ‘God is not confined to the laws of time’ excuses. Because I see a few problems with either answer.”

eternal adj.

Being without beginning or end; existing outside of time.

The problems aren’t with either answer but with foundations upon which the questions are based.

Forever doesn’t exist. It is man’s concept because man perceives of time as a “forever” existent.

God exists outside of the universe. God caused the creation of the universe with the instant of the big bang. From that moment time came into being.

Time is finite in going backward but may be infinite in going forward.

Man can’t perceive of the reality in which God IS. By attempting to confine God to our understanding of reality we create the basis for false assumptions.

We are each entitled to our own belief systems. You are entitled to yours and I respect that. In my belief system I don’t accept Jesus and conventional Christian doctrine.

I believe that we are all part of the fabric of God and that we will all eventually gravitate back into the Oneness of God regardless of the errors that may have occurred along our paths back to that Oneness.

We are because God Is. God Is that we are. We all eventually return to God though by varied paths.

What I believe!

I don’t believe in Heaven! I do believe in reincarnation! (Rebirth of the soul in another body.)

I believe that everyone is part of the spiritual composition/soul of God. The purpose of everyone is to go forth into the earth plane and other planes to “experience” and to ultimately gravitate back into the Oneness of God.

Along their paths of experience/knowledge acquisition, many entities (the spiritual particles of God) choose to enter (incarnate/reincarnate) the earth plane with various goals as purpose.

When the entity’s physical body dies the entity goes back to a state or plane of existence where it considers its immediate past. It judges whether it accomplished those goals that it set out to accomplish and determines in which plane and under what circumstances it may need to incarnate in order to accomplish additional goals on its way back to the Oneness of God.

Essentially, the entity is its own judge as to accomplishments, failures, goals and the circumstances under which it chooses to incarnate.

The above is my opinion and is expounded upon in my treatise A Search For Truth:

Answer #15

It’s a mystery to me - we can hardly get our heads around the universe, let alone someone as eternal and far-ranging as God. I don’t think we really need to know, at the moment.

Answer #16

If nothing existed then nothing would still exist, or I should say, or not exist. Nothing cannot create anything.

There is no beginning and no ending to God; He has and will always exist.

Answer #19

It is not in the knowledge of man as to where God came from. It is beyond our human understanding. . . . Or if you want to read and figure it out a scripture you can have some fun with is

Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, And the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, And the earth was full of his praise.

Answer #20

God has always been and He will forever live through out eternity. God created every thing and every one. He is our Creator and our Redeemer.

Answer #21

If you are a “truth-seeker” you will find Him, but if you are not…you will not get it.

Answer #22

That’s your best answer?

Answer #23

Read the Bible and sincerely pray for understand. If you are a “truth-seeker” you will find it.

Answer #24

First off, God doesn’t exist. Everything came from nothing, which is something. There was nothing…and over time vacuum fluctuations and particals form at quantum level. and the pressure caused a singularity.

Answer #25

God created us because He desired to have children; we are the children of God Almighty. God existed even before nothing, so therefore God has always been and He will always be.
