When should I get my puppy nuetered?

I have a 2 month old male sheltie. When is a good time to get him fixed? I thought I read somewhere that I should wait until he is about six months old, but I’m not sure.

Answer #1

Six months is the the “going age”…the age most people wait to have a pup neutered…No older, tho. They’ve gotten a lot of their growth in by then, but none of the hormones…and that makes for a very nice dog.

I have yet to get my dog fixed and she is nearly a year and half. Get your dog fixed as soon as possible, though.

Good for you for being a responsible owner who will neuter his dog!

Neutering can be performed at any age over age 8 weeks provided both testicles have descended. Dogs neutered before puberty (generally age 6 months) tend to grow a bit bigger than dogs neutered after puberty (testosterone is involved in the causing bones to stop growing so without testosterone the bones stop growing later). The same behavior and prostate health benefits can be realized no matter what age the dog is. (In other words, a dog does not become “too old” to obtain the same health and behavioral benefits of neutering.)

The traditional age for neutering is around 6 months of age and many veterinarians still recommend neutering at this age.

I wouldnt do it at all I have a ten year old jack russell terrier and n3ver had im fixed

Answer #5

Well…I have a 7 month jack and austrailian shepard mix…We waited so that he would build up his character and be trained with his natrual chemicals(Loss of testosterone if they are neutered)…They tend to not be as obedient if they are neutered at an early age… Hope I helped…Best of Luck
