When learning a foreign language not with a class?

If you are learning a foreign language on your own and not with teacher/class instruction, how long each day should be a sufficient amount to learn and practice the language and what could be done to help your mind better “think” in the target language? I have heard that having a vocabulary of 800 words should be able to suffice without having a problem with communication. I plan to use this language everyday for 1-3 months.

It would be best to learn it from someone who has it for their native language but familiar with English as well - then from him, you’d know how to say this and that in that language. Along with doing this, research the basics - like what does this word mean in English and stuff, then writing them down in a notebook.

This approach is most effective when you’re in the target country itself - it puts you in a frame of mind that learning it determines how well you can live in that place. With that, you can learn it in about a month or so…
