When is Suicide exceptable if ever?

My friend is trying to tell me that suicide is exceptable if there is a good reason for it and if it was thought out and not from a whim but I dont think its right. Does anyone agree with my friend that under some conditions suicide might be good?

According to the bible, suicide is an unforgiveable sin. How can you repent if you are no longer alive? The thought process behind the “unforgivable” part is that you belong to God and you killed what he made and all that jazz. So when people kill themselves, people say “We will see you in Heaven” - according to their religion - they won’t.

Some people on the other hand believe that depression (which causes suicide) is a disease and God wouldn’t punish you if you had a disease, so I think it’s all who you talk to.

You do realize what behaviors are deemed to be acceptable will depend on the culture? There is no such things as universal acceptability. (There’s a few examples including incest between mother and son, but those are few and far between). Your question is broad so I’ll try and get to all the contingencies. If a person is dying and physically suffering without any hope of recovery, then I think suicide is the most humane thing you can allow for that person. I cannot possibly fathom how anyone can hold an argument against that (although I know there are many, I personally do not understand them). Then there’s certain cultures where suicide is simply what one does under certain situations. The only one that comes to mind is the Japanese Samurai ‘Seppuku’. To judge another culture based on one’s own is the height of ethnocentrism. So I wont. It is acceptable to them (or was at least) and thus it is acceptable. As for the suicide every one else seems to be focusing on, the suicide that appears to follow depression. I, personally, believe that an individual has a right to their own life. It is no more selfish to kill yourself to end pain, than it is for someone to demand you live in pain so that they do not have to suffer from pain at your death. That is the height of selfishness, to demand someone else’s life. There also appears to be an assumption that depression is caused by a problem. Depression is not caused by a problem. If it were that simple, you’d solve the problem, and life would move on. It may be triggered or set off by a problem, but problems do not causes depression. And for most people, depression is treatable. For a certain few it is not. I would not presume to tell people that they must live in pain for the rest of their lives. But at the root of this all is the question of whether a person has a right to their own personhood, their own being, their own life. And I think they do.

Answer #3

definitely not, you live only once so ending your life short is pointless. besides things can turn around at any point of time.

Answer #4

Suicide is the chickens way out. It is for people that think they can’t deal with life anymore…when in reality they just don’t want to deal with life anymore. When someone commits suicide they think only of themself and what will make their pain go away, they don’t think about how it will affect anyone else.

So no, there is never an acceptable reason for suicide.

Answer #5

As a personal opinion I believe suicide to be one of the most selfish acts any person could do. I know that there ARE variables which are just too difficult to take into account when generalising, but I truly believe that someone who takes their own life is behaving in a way which is only going to hurt other people. The people that love them, even if they don’t seem to realise it. There are times during horrific illnesses where it might be acceptable because life is too LITERALLY painful to keep living… But it’s such a difficult choice to make I just feel it shouldn’t be made at all unless in extreme circumstances.
