When is a puppy old enough to use an petsafe containment collar?

We have 2 red bone hounds about 3 mths old – I dont want to keep them penned all the time. We have about 4 acres with neighbor all around – The collar would get them out of the pen but allow them to stay on the property – how old should they be before trying a petsafe containment collar

First, you have to do some training before you can reliably use an invisible fence…They also do not keep other animals out, so you still have to do some supervision, especially when they are still so young and vulnerable.

Secondly…at 3 months a pup is growing like a weed, developing in personality/socialness/learning new things daily…really still a baby. Because these collars work on a static electrical charge, I think 3 months is way to young to stress them with electricity. There are fear periods at 4 months, 6-7 months and again in the one year range. Different pups also react differently to electrical charges…a less confident pup might lay down and refuse to move at all. I’d wait till they were at least 5 months old before I’d actually plug in the fence, and let them feel the static charge…and then only at the lowest setting.

Up to then tho, you can start showing them the boudries with a regular collar and a long line. When the pup reaches the boundry, give a decent jerk of the line and say “NO! BACK!!”…they can learn a LOT before you ever plug in the fence.

You should try putting a collar on every now and again to get them used to it and give them encouragement and praise when they have it on so they like it. Probably start now. Start with only 5 mins then working up to 20 through the weeks and then leave them on for about half a day then work up to a whole day. Um im not actually sure when they should have it on full time though but im sure its by now?!
