Is whole wheat bread or multi-grain bread healthier, and why?

Answer #1

Depends on the bread. Neither is necessarily healthy. Whole wheat indicates that the bread has some whole wheat flour in it. Most “whole wheat” breads have a token amount of whole wheat flour and some brown coloring. To get a healthier bread look for “100% whole wheat” on the label. Multi-grain breads may still be mostly white flour. Look for “100% whole grain” or look at the ingredients. White flour is the enemy but it goes by various names. It can be called “enriched” “bleached” “all-purpose” “bromated” etc. Make sure all the ingredients indicate whole grains.
