What is poverty exactly?

What does it mean to be in poverty other then the average, “your just poor.” answer.

Answer #1

I live in a 3rd world country and unfortunately its something I see every day..you probably dont have to travel that far away to understand..there is always some level of poverty.. unless you live in a country like norway it sad how a lot people dont understand the meaning of poverty..in the end the greatets percentage of the worlds population IS poor. it affects everyone for we are all connected. we may never understand what is like to not have opportunities just beacuse of where we were born and there are different degrees of poverty but we should all at least try to. in my case I start projects that provide opportunities for people less fortunate than me and participate in volunteer work because being in touch with poverty improves my perspective on life (shows me what is really important in life) while I help others!

Answer #2

Ok…here is an actual definition rather than what it means to people.

Absolute poverty: a household lives on under $1 per day.

Relative poverty: defines poverty in relation to the average ie you are within the bottom 5% of a country’s average salary/wage. However you may still be above the absolute poverty line.

Answer #3

I would think to be poor obviously somone who lives in a place so poor that they have less than $5 a week for food they have to do things like search for there own food, and make things to sell to get a tiny bit of money they have no doctors and cant afford basic school education they live day to day, not knowing if they will have food for tomorrow they come from a place with a very low life expectancy they dont live in a nice house like you, they probably dont even live in a house, they live under something that shelters them, if there lucky enough to have that things like that being in poverty doesnt mean “‘oh you have no money your so poor”‘ it means they really have NO money for food, education, doctors, shelter, anything

Answer #4
