What is "blasphemy?"

I’ve heard that the only unforgiveable sin is blasphemy. What is it and why is it unforgiveable???

Answer #1

Also, I quoted Matthew, Mark, and Luke, all of which are gospels from the New Testament - written after the crucifixion, which would make them still current by your interpretation.

Answer #2

Blasphemy is not just a action of disrespecting God, but it is the rejection of salvation, and the rejection of salvation is followed by eternity in hell. But, if someone were to commit blashemy then repent and accept Jesus, they’ll be forgiven and will still go to heaven. So, blashemy is not really “unforgiveable”, if followed by repentance and salvation.

Answer #3

Supposedly all you have to do is say “I deny the holy spirit”. And now I’m doomed to eternal damnation with no hope of salvation. Oh dear.

Answer #4

So how do you determine exactly which bits of the bible have been repealed? Is it back to relying on your “holy spirit” infestation?

“My point is that we all have our old human nature in play, different perspectives, and not all those who claim to be Christians are actually true believers with the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, so yes we will have our different views but same God.”

So in a nutshell, we can’t trust anyone who says they “have the holy spirit”, because they could be lying, or deceiving themselves, or simply seeing what they want to see. So why should we take your assertion that you’re the one who really has it right any more seriously than anyone else’s?

Answer #5

“I’m convinced this is correct, not because it makes sense in my mind but because I have the Holy Spirit dwelling in me to help me understand God’s word.”

So… basically, we have to take your word for it? How can you be so confident that you “have the holy spirit dwelling in [you]”, but all the other people with different interpretations don’t?

Answer #6

arachnid I understand where your coming from on this, but consider this: the bible was written during 7 seperate dispensations. currently we are under the day of grace, but the verses you quoted are applying to the manifestation of the power of Christ in that day when he was here on earth and attributing that power, which they saw with their own eyes, to Satan. In Matthew 12:25-30, the Lord Jesus shows that they are contradicting themselves and in willfulness refusing his testimony. So, if someone blasphemed during the time when the law was given to Moses and when the Lord Jesus was crucified, the sin would be “unforgiveable”. But now in the day of grace, we have God’s mercy and will be forgiven of this sin if we are repentant.

leellen: The bible doesn’t agree with you:

Matthew 12:31-32

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Mark 3:29

But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation.

Luke 12:10

But unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

Also, according to Leviticus 24:16, it’s your duty to stone me to death.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how different people interpret/apply the New and Old Testements. The Old Testement contains theLaw and commandments given to the Jews, who were all under the Law. If blasphemy was committed during that time, it would have been considered an unforgiveable sin. But once the Lord Jesus was sacraficed on the cross, the punishment of sin (including blasphemy) was his burden. Your earlier references were written before his crucifiction and so blasphemy was considered unforgivable at the time. I’m convinced this is correct, not because it makes sense in my mind but because I have the Holy Spirit dwelling in me to help me understand God’s word. As you have made clear you dont believe there is a God, it would be impossible to understand. For without God there wouldn’t be his word. And so the bible must not be true if there is no God. So why do you use reference to condratict me? If, you so clearly beleive there is no God and that the Bible is false.

Answer #15

You are right in saying Matthew, Mark and Luke were written after the crucifixtion. But, they were written of events that happened before the crucifixtion. The day of grace was not first recorded in Matthew 1, the day of grace began after the Lord died. And the Lord Jesus crucifixtion began in chapter 27, which was after your references in chapter 12. The Church period(when the day of grace began) did not start until the beginning of Acts.

Although all true christians do have the holy spirit dwelling in them, we still have our old human nature, if we didn’t have our old human natue we would be perfect and in a sense be like God. Quite obviously we aren’t. My point is that we all have our old human nature in play, different perspectives, and not all those who claim to be Christians are actually true believers with the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, so yes we will have our different views but same God. For example: A family is all of the same family but everyone in the family will have a slightly different take on things, and how they should run. God didn’t design us to be robots and perfect. Otherwise we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
