What if my dog dies at home can I bury him in the back yard?

She is a yellow lab and she is 13yrs old and I don’t want her to die on a cold slab in the vets office. So I would rather let her spend her last days here at home and make a memorial for her in the yard. My kids brought this to me but I don’t know if there is laws for that. And can I get in trouble for it?

It might vary from county to county…but yes you can bury her in the back yard (be sure and get underground locates, if there’s any chance that there are natural gas and electrrical lines in the area)…

However, before you decide that she should die at home (which may not only be very painful for her…since they don’t necessarily go to sleep and never wake up…many times they are restless, fearful, and in extreme pain)…and it may be very traumatic for you as well…AND your children. Think about having her put to sleep at the Vets, and taking her home for a memorial… (or call around and see if a Vet might come to your home to put her to sleep…many large animal Vets DO make house calls)…

Yes, there are laws that must be followed:

If you bury or abandon the carcass of any dead animal in any lake, river, stream, meadow or other public place, or within 1 mile of another’s residence who does not consent to the burial or abandonment you will be guilty of a misdemeanor. If you choose to bury a deceased animal’s carcass on your own land you must bury the carcass at least 4 feet under the ground. You can be guilty of a misdemeanor offense every 24 hour period that you permit an animal carcass to be present on your property in violation of this rule.

Nothing wrong with that I don’t think. Very honorable and compassionate of you. Like the others have said before me: Bury him deep, so he is less likely to be disturbed, and get a nice casket for him. I would say an old wooden wine or produce crate, you could make one very inexpensively too I’m sure. Bury him under or near a deciduous (leafy) tree for good luck too!

Answer #5

No,you can’t get in trouble–make sure it’s your property your talking about and then you can dig up your pup in your backyard. If you have heard different, you should talk to your local police officers to see if it is ok. I’m sorry if your golden lab passes away.I wish the best for you and your family, including your dog!

Answer #6

if the dog is in pain then you shouldnt let it suffer and then die, because that would be cruel if its just old, age then yes if not, take her to the vet and let them quickly and painlessly put her down and then take her home and bury her in your backyard

Answer #7

YEs you can… you would not get in trouble, all that you really need to make sure is that it’s like deep. lets say 4 metters. This helps so that the dead body cannot stik up because you know is dead. But just you know make sure he is burried deep and also put in something hard, like a box, It just needs to be Something that dosen;t look trashy on him.

GOOD LUCK:)
