What can I give my rabbit to keep her warm, safe and dry?

My rabbit lives outside and the cage is soaking wet I have tried those covers but it just blows off in the wind. I give her loads of straw to try and keep her warm but all she does is eat it so I duno what to do. I heard in the summer they can sit it a little bit of water to keep them cool so could they possibly sit in a little bit of warm water to keep them warm during winter? Please help!

my dad built a raised hut for my rabbit, as there used to be two of them it wasnt such a huge worry in winter whether they were warm enough as they were always snuggled up to eachother, but now I only have one I always make sure in the winter there is a LOT of straw on both levels of the hutch. I only have one bit of the hutch open with mesh so I pack the straw up the mesh to keep the wind out and also cover that side of the hutch with some old carpet. Make sure you cover the whole floor with lots of straw, enough so your rabbit can cover itself completly and make sure that it is warm enough. try finding a plastic cover that you could tie to the cage, or invest in a more weather proof hutch if you can afford it. there are lots of good tips on the rspca website for keeping rabbits warm in winter. a bit wordy, but I hope this helps.

Dont’ put her in water in the winter! The water may start out warm, but it will soon get cold and that could kill her. I used to have rabbits, and my dad acrually built a hutch from them in the backyard that was elevated and half of it had the wire mesh on top, and the other side was wood-covered for shelter.

If you don’t have the time, money or know-how to build something, then I’d say find a way to secure that cover better. Maybe use some tape or even bungy cords. There’s lots of things you could try to tie or tape it down to stay in place.

As for warmth, I’d say keep her as close to the house as possible with lots of sunlight during the day, and I’d throw a bunch of Alfalfa in for her to eat and nestle into. It’s good to seperate the alfalfa in different areas if the cage is big enough, because if she’s smart she use one to poop in/on and another to sleep… or she might just eat it all.

Either way with straw or alfalfa, you need to change it at least twice a week, just for cleanliness, and more often if it’s being rained on.

You can also try securing some cardboard or plastic sheets to the sides of one part of the cage so she’s more protected from the elements.

Hope this helps. :)

I have a rabbit that lives out side and it dose the same thing by eating all the hay. And I am always scared that in the winter it will be cold but what I have done is put the rabbit hutch round the back of the house were it’s sheltered from the wind. I have also covered the top of the hutch and the sides of the hutch with bubble wrap and I have pinned some to the front of the hutch so I can lift it up during the day time I hope this helps. :) .
