Has anyone had food poisoning?

Ok, just discovered I have eaten something 2 weeks out of date (eeew)

Thought something tasted funny, but I dismissed it. Never had food poisoning before, I know the text book definition…but what’s it really like?

Just worried…

It depends on what the food was as to whether you would get sick or not. Years ago, I ate some home-made sausage and my boyfriend had some too.

We both had upset stomachs later that night or next day (can’t recall). My boyfriend did as someone here suggested, and made himself throw up. Then he was okay, but I couldn’t do that. My stomach was upset for about a week.

I took some Gaviscon, which helped some, but, I continued to have nausea really bad. Finally, it went away but I just had a mild case I guess or it could have been a stomach flu. People have died from getting ecoli from eating bad meat. I think that comes from getting something bad from a fast food restaurant.

Meat is the worst thing to eat if it’s out of date. It made me so sick that I don’t ever take any chances anymore. I’ll throw something away first.

BTW, Gaviscon is great for acid reflux.

This really depends on what the food was. Cheese 2 weeks out of date is often fine, and uncooked rice and stuff like that can be fine for longer. You can see if they’ve gone mouldy, and if they haven’t, you can fairly safely eat them! If it was a yoghurt or something then the dates are more important, but you might still be lucky.

But, if you’re not lucky, then you’ll just have a tummy bug. The bacteria in the food are the ‘bugs’, and the illness is usually pretty much the same as the kind you get when you catch a ‘bug’ from a person instead of from food. Often it can be fairly short (I drank some out of date orange juice a few weeks ago and just felt queasy for about 12 hours - nothing more than that). But sometimes it can be worse. If you end up vommiting or with bad diarrohea, you just need to do what you’d do if it was a usual tummy bug, and call the doctor if it gets dangerous in terms of dehydration or weakness. I hope it doesn’t come to that, though. My guess is, it probably won’t. Very best of luck, sooitca! Let us know how you’re doing tomorrow (you’ll know by then…)

as everyone ese says it does depend on what kind of food it was dairy and any meat isnt a good thing to eat past the use by date however use by means you need to use it by that date best before means its best eaten before that date, but you can eat it after the date…it just probably wont taste as fresh

food poisoning is the most common cause of sickness so anyone that says they havnt had food poisoning is lieing. but most people dont even realise that the reason they feel a little off 90% of the time is the result of food poisoning. dont stress bugt do be careful as people have died because of food poisoning before so just be careful and if you stay sick for more then a few days take a trip to the dr.

Answer #5

if you start to feel sick, try and make your self sick, ok I wouldnt normally encourage being sick, but it could help to get it out of your system I dont know… drink plenty of water… have you heard of the medicine pepto bismol? it helps sickness/stomach ache… I had some before when I ate and undercooked chicken pizza.. good luck, also, anybody tell me if I was wrong about the sick thing, it isnt a definate answer! feel better soon.

Answer #6

What did you eat Sooitca ?

I ate a tinned rice pudding that was six months out of date… I did not even consider that it would be bad… and it was fine… Most tins have a shelf life of two years… they are not deadly poison 24 hours after the sell by date… they take time to deteriorate and usually it is the taste or the consistency that begins to change.

With other stuff it varies by degrees - it really does depend on what you ate and how it was packaged and what its shelf life is…tell us and we will try to help.

Most cases of food poisoning are not related to out of date stuff but to something inherently wrong with the product during processing.

I ate some cooked turkey. it had some funny colour on it, but a jar of beetroot had leaked in my fridge and I thought the colur was that. on closer inspection I see the meat wasn’t red, it was blue?!?!?!? craaap!

so blue meat, tasted funny and 2 weeks out of date??? it’s because I brought the same meat, from the same shop last week and I thought I had got that out, and you know, I am sure I glimpsed at the meat container and it said 22 july, but no, 22 june when I checked…bugger!
