Umm...Is my ferret trying to ATTACK me or is she playing?

I am a fairly new ferret owner and since they are actually illegal in CA, I never came across one before until now and I need some help because obviously I can’t just call any friend up and ask this.

Anyways…

Fondou (my baby ferret) was just now hopping around backwards and all and opened her mouth like she wanted to bite me. But she was jumping everywhere and doing flips. Then she did bite me, and I just let her. And she didn’t end up biting it hard. She held on to my finger and it was more like a nibble. Soo…is this how ferrets play or did she just try to really attack me?

Ferrets do something that most refer to as the “weasel war dance” they hop around when they get super excited and will play fight with you but it is harmless…when ferrets are angry or scared they will back up away from you or hide from you and their fur especially in their tail will poof out. Your ferret is just excited and playful.

thay are just playing arround my ferrets do it all the time and I had ferrets all my life since I was 5 if you need any more help just ask

Answer #3

its a dance they do. they do it when in play mode. my girl ferret in one and gets all kind of skiddish like that. she loves to pounce and nibble toes. oh and play fight the older male ferret. shes prob just playing and trying to get attention. but if she does start to nibble you pick her up my the scruff, this will not hurt her, and tell her no. no bite spray works very well also.

I used to have a ferret, and he loved grapes. if he did something good, then he would get a grape as a reward. but if he bit too hard, even just playing around, id sharply tap the end of his nose… no grapes for you! and I trained him that way because he knew that if he was good, he got grapes, and if he did something he wasnt supposed to, he got in trouble. and yes, time outs work too :)

Ferrets are mostly sly creatures so he/she will do that a lot. A sign that the ferret is playing is it was not a hard bite. If the ferret wanted to attack you, you would be bleeding probably.

I would suggest buying ferret handling gloves if the bites start getting harder. He/she might want to play a lot more. PM me for more questions on the ferret’s actions if needed.

What can I do to train my 5 month ferret not to poop under furniture. I have a litter box but it is not working. He plays with the sand and poops somewhere else.

Also he bites my toes and sometimes the top part of my foot hard. How can I teach him to stop biting?
