Is it true that if you lift weights your growth stops and it even makes you shorter?
If you do a lot of muscle sports while you are still a kid, this can influence your growth. But this is only really relevant for professional or excessive sports or if you start very young. It may make you an inch shorter in the end than you’d have been if you didn’t work out. The severe effects, where people become veritable midgets, is when they start training in sports schools and sports camps when they are 4 or 5.
What you really should NOT do while you still grow is using steroids or prohormones to boost muscle growth. A lot of weight lifters do that but it’s definitely not good for you, You shouldn’t actually do that as an adult either. But for a teenager it can be really risky.
It’s a popular misconception that if you start lifting, you’ll stop growing. It’s actually quite the opposite.
There are some scientific studies that show that individuals who lift weights or exercise increase the production of GH(Growth Hormone) and can actually grow slightly more muscular or taller.
The reason why people think weight lifting stunts growth is because it is the only sport that poses the highest risk of injuring the growth plates if you do happen to hurt yourself. It does happen, but only if you’re not doing something correctly. I’ve been weightlifting for 2 years and just recently started bodybuilding seriously and I have not seen any increase or decrease in height.
As the other user said, it is not safe using steroids or prohormones at a young age. Anabolic steroids create synthetic testosterone which may increase strength temporarily, but disables the production of your natural testosterone in the body. This can have serious effects such as shrinking of the testicles, early balding, and other things. Prohormones are slightly safer and legal as all they do is increase the production of testosterone you already have and put it to good use. I don’t recommend using any of them however, because you’re a teenager so you should have more than enough testosterone in your body.
Height is also a genetic factor. If your parents are tall, chances are you’ll be tall and weight lifting might increase your height. Bodybuilding has had no effect on my height, nor have any of the supplements I use, it is due to my genetics of being in a short family. Hope this answered your question.
