Do you think that today's culture thinks about suicide too much?

You always see suicide depicted in music and TV. And music and TV controls lives in todays multimedia culture. I think it’s gotten o the point where it has been so widely accepted that if something as minimal as a stubbed toe happens to a depressed person, they wil consider suicide. How do we stop this?

Answer #1

I think it is becoming too common.I guess there are just a lot of pressures in the world now. I would say cyber bullying is more pronounced and being done more. This obviously causes more suicidal people.I’m not saying suicide is good or bad, but I feel that by the media showing it so much or referring to it is making it seem like it is the thing to do. Like: your boyfriend broke up with you, your parents are divorcing and you failed your english test. You are depressed. It is okay to commit suicide. I’m not sure if that explained very well but I mean that it’s kind of becoming like “everybody is doing it, you can do it too.”

As for stopping it.. that’s like telling the sun to stop shining. I wish we could have peace but the truth is that there are always going to be bad people in the world. There are always going to be people who make other people feel bad to the point of taking their own life. Right now, I really don’t feel we can stop it.

Answer #4

I think that there is too much culture around depression and suicide. I can tell you as a depressed person that i dont dress in all black, im an A student , and all honestly unless i confide in someone they would never know, we need to stop focusing on people asking for attention and focus on helping everyone who may have these problems. I hate these artists and such because they are creating even more stigma…as if that should be possible

Answer #5

Is suicide glamorized more by the younger generation, perhaps. However there’s nothing that shows suicide is on the increase. You’re using media to display what exactly? There’s nothing that shows depression is on the increase, that suicide is ever performed in frivolous circumstances, or that the culture has led to an increased acceptance of suicide. You’re drawing conclusions based on no evidence.

Answer #6

I just think, like with most other modern issues people are more open in speaking about it. It’s the same with depression that gets diagnosed more nowadays.
