When is the best time to get a Kitten/Cat de-clawed?

Answer #1

Never? Would you like your nails ripped out?

Answer #2

No of course not and i don’t want my kitten either but my mom is making me get it done or she goes to the pound. :(

Answer #3

Is she ripping stuff up?

Answer #4

She starting to claw on the couch and other furniture and giving deep scratches on bare skin. We have a thing for her to scratch but she likes the couch more.

Answer #5

If your cat is doing that..I’m sorry 2 say but your mom is right(not the part about when she might put the cat in the pound). I don’t think your mom wants 2 replace your couch just when your cat wants to tear it up(not that I don’t like animals I love them!).

Answer #6

The bare skin is not acceptable, she just needs to be trained. Say no, and then refuse to engage. I usually push my cats nose down (not hit, just firmly push), and if she’s really misbehaving she gets locked in the bathroom for a few minutes (the other alternative is spraying water on her). She’s learned how hard she can bite, to retract claws when she’s anywhere near skin, and no means stop doing what you’re doing instantly. They can be trained, you just have to be consistent with them. There’s usually stuff you can buy for the furniture to stick on, or try this, http://funadvice.com/r/3jsnmkb5jc. Declawing really shouldnt be an option, but if it is, it needs to be the last option.

Answer #7

I’m sorry I disagree. If you’re going to be a pet owner you accept responsibility and you train your pet. You dont maim them for the sake of convenience.

Answer #8

I think instead of getting it de-clawed, you should train it, and you can even dull it’s nails if possible. Maybe get some sort of nail file for a cat? Training it not to claw things will be hard, but I would suggest using a spray bottle. When it is clawing the furniture, spray it a couple of times, don’t soak it. Cat’s don’t like water, it will learn in time that it’s not okay to do it.

Answer #9

no joke!! im with him!!

Answer #10

Is it an outdoor cat? Outdoor cats NEED their claws to climb on trees and fend off other animals. De-clawing it is really cruel. Try using some sort of nail sander to blunt the nails.

Answer #11

I have 11 cats…none are declawed. We trim their nails regularly, so they aren’t very sharp. As kittens, they naturally tried to climb legs and other such things that kittens do, but we trained them (yes - cats can be trained), and they are much gentler now. Cats can be taught what the word no means - use it often. A spray bottle is a quick method of discipline (on that note - don’t forget to praise the cat when he does good…like using the scratching post…try rubbing a little catnip on the scratching post to attract his interest to it). You can prevent damage to the furniture by pinning thick plastic around the base where the cat scratches, or attaching double-sided sticky tape (cats hate that). There really are alternatives to declawing, if your mother will only give it a chance…it almost makes me wonder why she didn’t cut off YOUR fingers when you were a baby to keep you from touching things you shouldn’t….you do realize that declawing a cat requires cutting off their toes to the first joint…right? It’s cruel.

Answer #12

Never….invest in a scratching post, and forget about taking it’s only defense away….You can also buy soft claws…they cover the tip of the nails….and protect furniture.

Answer #13

Never! What if she gets out of the house? Other cats will kick her ass

Answer #14

okay thattttt issss meannn and not kewl you can get caps for the kittys claws so it doesnt rip things up or scratch you but i would not advice ripping the kittys claws out not nice

Answer #15

That is what I forgot!!! I knew about those, but I didn’t think of them when I answered!!! YES!!! the caps are a great idea! They are a lot better option than getting them de-clawed!!!

Answer #16

I Wud say train the kitten/cat to scratch the post maybe adding catnip on it.and use water sprays if u can and i heard ther are some kìnd of spray which wen u put ìt on the coach they dont scratch it etc. Also maybe talk to a cat speacilist and ask them. My cat doesnt scratch the coach. Try and change ure mums mind and ask for time to train the kitten. Good Luck :D

Answer #17

uhmm never.! because cats climb trees to get away from other animals and if you get them declawed then they cant hide from other animals such as dogs and etc. they would get killed.!

Answer #18

Imagine getting your first knuckle on every finger cut off…

Would you really want to do that to your cat.
