Spay healing problems on my doggie!

I had my Chihuahua spayed about a month and a half ago. Seemed to be healing just fine, said in the documentation given post op that the sutures she was given were not the kind that dissolve, but they are not the kind that need to be removed either…a few nights ago, she started furiously licking the site after we thought all was well and now she’s got a huge swollen nipple near the site and about 4 inches of irritated, horrible itching skin around the site that she can’t stop licking/biting. We removed a couple of the stitches that were sticking out ourself, but there are still some in there we think. Buried deep in the site of incision.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any advice? Will probably take her to the vet in a day or two but would appreciate any input if y’all have it.

Thanks!!

Hi juniperone,

Take your pup to the vet ASAP. If the stitches aren’t dissolvable and don’t need to be removed, then what are they? They have to be one or the other, and it’s obviously not dissolving. Did you get her from a shelter? Sometimes they really don’t know what they’re doing. We got both of our dogs from the shelter, freshly spayed. The shelter people told us they would dissolve, but when we took them to the vet for a check-up, the vet told us they had to be removed.

So my answer is take her to the vet sooner rather than later. It can develop into a nasty infection… Keep us updated.

Hi Could I please ask what you did? I am having a very similiar problem with my Shiba Inu.

well i work at a spay/neuter program and i deal with surgeries,,,.. you should first purchase a e-collar for your dog and she has to wear it for about 2 weeks,, you can only take it off when she eats and that will help by not licking the area.. they may give her some anti-biotics but there is really nothing you can really do. you have to just wait till it heals, the e-collar may have to be worn more than 2 weeks… since you say it is swollen already it means she has been licking it and chewing at the incision side for a while, which is not really good.

okay my dog had gotten breast cancer and died :( but anyways you need to go to vet because I think she has a infeccion you need to call the vet. Has she came into heat yet?…if so about a year after my dog got fixed she got the cancer and the % is a lot higher after there fist heat and more after the 2 one. So take her to the vet.
